Legislator Support Switch For Crunch Outdoor Game

From News10Now:

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Two weeks ago, it seemed the Syracuse Crunch would glide toward hosting the first AHL outdoor hockey game at Alliance Bank Stadium. But earlier this week, the legislator who originally sponsored the bill withdrew his support and as a result, the issue wasn't even voted on.

"I recognize that we are in a difficult economy right now and we can't do everything that we want to do. But the frustration for me came in the legislature not even willing to consider it," said Joanie Mahoney, the Onondaga County Executive.

To Crunch owner Howard Dolgon's relief, Sam Laguzza stepped up as the bill's new sponsor. He now has a few days to try to convince his peers. The county is being asked to spend $350,000 from the room occupancy tax. Opponents fear that game profits will fail to cover these costs while supporters argue that they need to look further down the line.

"We don't have an unlimited amount of money. Somebody's got to be at the table, having the discussion, who's going to be representing the taxpayers," said William Meyer, the legislature chairman.

"You may not see the return of $350,000 on the spreadsheet that day, you may not even see a $100,000, but long-term, for what my objective is, spotlighting Central New York and the region, I think it's going to pay back multitudes of times," said Sam Laguzza, legislature of the 16th district.

Howard Dolgon says if the issue is not voted on, he'll scrap the idea completely.

"We will not do an outdoor game this year if it's not approved on June 2nd. There's only so many walls you can bang you head against before you get hurt," said Dolgon.

But with a new sponsor, it's most likely there will at least be some movement. Should the initial idea fall through, one idea being floated is to have the hockey game at the Carrier Dome instead.

Meyer says he supports this idea as many of the amenities are already in place. Laguzza says he'd like to see both the games at the Dome and at Alliance Bank Stadium.

Elmira College Nears Decision on Hockey Coaching Vacancy

Elmira College has closed the job opening for their head coaching position with the men's ice hockey team. The position had been posted at the NCAA online career center since the resignation of eight-year coach Tim Ceglarski on Apr. 22.

Former Elmira assistant and current Potsdam head coach Aaron Saul (pictured) is considered by many to be the most likely candidate to replace Ceglarski. Saul was hired by the Bears in March of 2007 to replace the retiring Glenn Thomaris, a former Elmira coach who Saul had played for. Since then, Saul has guided the program to a 19-25-9 mark and two post-season appearances. In the two years prior to Saul's arrival, Potsdam's record was a combined 12-34-5.

Potsdam recently posted an opening for their assistant men's ice hockey coaching position on the NCAA Career Center. Saul's assistant with the Bears for each of the past two seasons has been Darcy Pettie. Pettie played four seasons under Ceglarski at Elmira, helping the 2006 team to the ECAC West title.

Elmira will open the 2009-10 regular season with a home-and-home series against Oswego State on Oct. 23 and Oct. 24. Potsdam will host the Lakers on Nov. 6 and visit the Campus Center Ice Arena on Jan. 29, 2010.

Oswego State Grappler Named to Academic All-District Team

Recent Oswego State graduate Derrick Smith was named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District second team for at-large sports on May 21. Smith majored in adolescence education and earned a 3.82 GPA this school year while qualifying for the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. The Mexico, New York native was a two-time team captain for the Lakers after joining the program as a sophomore transfer from Division 1 Clarion University.

Smith's work in the classroom has been recognized by numerous organizations. The National Wrestling Coaches Association has twice named him a Scholar All-American, and he has been named to the Commissioner's List by the State University of New York Athletic Conference. Recently, SUNY Oswego named Smith the recipient of the Donald Snygg award, given annually to the most oustanding senior male student-athlete.

Stockwell To Be Named Oswego State Men's Hoops Coach

Multiple sources have confirmed that SUNY Oswego will soon name Adam Stockwell as their men's basketball head coach. Stockwell has been the coach of Clarkson for the past five seasons. This past season, he led the Golden Knights to a 15-11 record and a place in the Liberty League post-season tournament. The year prior, Clarkson won the league tournament as Stockwell was named conference coach of the year.

Stockwell was a standout basketball player at Belleville-Henderson Central School, located about 45 miles northeast of Oswego. He went onto play for LeMoyne College, where he is among the program's leaders in scoring, steals, and three-point shooting. He comes to Oswego State as the successor to 13-year coach Kevin Broderick. Broderick left the program last month to accept the head coaching position at his alma mater, Nazareth College.

UPDATE: SUNY Oswego's official release.

Former OCC Lazer Cody Jamieson Scores Championship Winner

He missed the first 12 games of the season due to an issue with his junior college transcript, but junior Cody Jamieson made it worth the wait today for the Syracuse University men's lacrosse program. The 2007 JUCO Male Athlete of the Year scored the game-winning goal in overtime of today's NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship.

Jamieson played his first two seasons of college lacrosse at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse. There, he led the Lazers to back-to-back undefeated seasons and a pair of NJCAA titles in 2006 and 2007. He now has one more year of eligibility at the NCAA level.

Big Red a Quarter Away From Big Upset

They've completed three quarters of the 2009 NCAA Men's Lacrosse National Championship game and Cornell leads Syracuse 7-5. The Orange were held to just one marker in the third quarter as the Cornell defense began to buckle down.

The Big Red are looking for their first national title since 1977. Syracuse is looking to become the first school to win consecutive titles since Princeton (1996-1998).

SUNYAC Champ Cortland Takes National Crown

SUNY Cortland won their second NCAA men's lacrosse championship in four years with a 9-7 victory over Gettysburg College today at Gillette Field in Foxboro, Mass. Junior midfielder Brandon Misiaszek scored a career-high five goals to help the Red Dragons overcome an ealry 4-2 deficit.

Cortland had won their 17th conference title on May 2 when they defeated Geneseo 14-13 in the title game. They defeated SUNY Oswego 25-3 on Apr. 29 in the semifinal round.

Where Is Knob Hockey?

For the past three playoffs, a series of online videos entitled Knob Hockey have appeared on both YouTube and Heavy.com. The videos use table hockey figures to parody the real-life events of that season's Stanley Cup Playoff. This year, they've posted nothing. We'll wait, but until then, enjoy this clip from last season.

Oswego Native Cole Could Miss Game 2

Carolina may have to take the ice in Pittsburgh's Mellon Arena without forward Erik Cole Thursday night in game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals. The Oswego-born pivot was injured in Monday night's game 1 match-up when he took a knee-to-knee hit from Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke.

Cooke, a former member of the Wellington Dukes and Syracuse Crunch, vocalized his displeasure during Pittsburgh's previous series with Washington when Alexander Ovechkin made a similar hit on Sergei Gonchar.

Gonchar missed games 5 and 6 of the series after the hit before returning for game 7; Ovechkin was not suspended by the league.

"If I did what he did, I wouldn't be on the ice," said Cooke after Ovechkin's hit on Gonchar. Time will tell, but at this point it appears that Cooke will be proven wrong by the league's suddenly lenient front office.

Witmer Named 2009 SUNYAC Men's Lax Coach of The Year

SUNY Oswego announced today that men's lacrosse coach Dan Witmer is the SUNYAC Coach of The Year for the 2009 season. In his 27th season at the helm of the Lakers program, Witmer guided Oswego State to five conference wins. That was good enough to earn the Lakers the number three seed as they returned to SUNAYC post-season play for the first time in three years.

Four's a Crowd in Laker Crease

The OJHL recently listed Markham's Daniel Jones as Oswego State's latest committed recruit for the 2009-2010 men's ice hockey season. Though the Lakers are looking to replace 14 skaters, Jones is a goaltender. That's a position Oswego State is in full stock of; Tim Potter and Kyle Gunn-Taylor each have a year of eligibility left while Paul Beckwith just completed his freshman year. This is a problem head coach Ed Gosek only wished he had back in November when his club was down to just one healthy goaltender in Chris Hyk.

So, now what? Will the Lakers retain the services of all four backstops for next season? Does Jones have a guaranteed spot on the roster? Will one of the more experienced goalies get cut? More on this developing story in the days to come...

McMahon/Kroenke Showdown Looms

Denver Nuggets owner Stan Kroenke committed a scheduling snafu last August when he lent the Pepsi Center to Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Entertainment for the night of May 25. Now the Nuggets need their home arena for their Western Conference Finals series with the Lakers.

McMahon has not hesitated to capitalize on the conflict and create some publicity for his grapplers. Today, he spoke with ESPN's Jonathan Coachman, a former employee of WWE. McMahon stated that he intends to bring his company to Denver on Monday, conflict or no conflict.

Lastly, I can't leave you without providing some video evidence of Coachman's time with WWE.

Dukes Put a Ring On It

Wellington Dukes' forward Chris Ayotte posted this photo on his Facebook page. It's a mock-up of the rings the Wellington Dukes will receive for winning the 2009 Central Conference title. Ayotte is listed as having committed to Oswego State on the OJHL website. He scored 32 goals in 51 games during the 2008-09 regular season for the Dukes.

Video: Foul Ball Strikes Oswego State Baseball Coach (2008)

This month marks the one-year point of what could have been a very tragic day for the Oswego State Baseball community. Long-time coach Frank Paino was hit in the head by a line drive late in a game at St. John Fisher College. Video of the accident has surfaced online at YouTube.com, it can be viewed below. The incident occurs at the 2:00 mark.

Great Series Wrapping Up Today

Fans of walk-off finishes in baseball may want to check out the Twins-Yankees game tonight at 7 p.m. (ESPN, YES). The Bronx Bombers have taken the first three games of the four-game stand, but could just as easily be on the verge of getting swept at the new ballpark tonight. Melky Cabrera, Alex Rodriguez, and Johnny Damon have all collected walk-off hits in what can only be considered "The Greatest Series in (New) Yankee Stadium History."

And if that wasn't enough excitement, the series has also seen an inside-the-park home run from New York's Brett Gardner.

Barbaro's Bro Earns First Victory, Still a Failure

Nicanor, the three-year-old baby brother of the late Barbaro, achieved his first victory on May 13 at Delaware Park. Unlike Barbaro, it took Nicanor four starts to achieve his first win. The Ryan Maloney Blog officially proclaims Nicanor the Ozzie Canseco of thoroughbreds.

Also, the fact that Nicanor is already three years old tells us he has missed his chance to run for the roses. The Kentucky Derby is exclusive to three-year-olds and was run two weeks ago.

Update: Thanks to Anna for the heads up on this. Nicanor's debut was almost as ill-fated as Barbaro's swan song:

Oswego State Men's Hockey Schedule Reax

The USCHO.com community was quick to comment once I posted the 2009-10 Lakers schedule. Here is a sampling of their thoughts:

Hammer:
Yikes.

Well, if they don't crash and burn early there, they're really set up to make a big run in the 2nd half of the season. They're literally at home for 2 months straight, even with the holidays mixed in there.
Matthew Webb:
How about two MCHA teams in Oswego only five days apart? I like.
Hammer:
Potentially. They could also be looking at Elmira-Adrian within 5 days, too, if I'm reading the schedule right.
Matthew Webb:
Which I believe you are. And yeah, MSOE might not play Oswego, but will still be there playing two Eastern teams. Hopefully it can dump at least one the same way it dumped Babson the last time the Raiders took a trip out there...
PrezdeJohnson:
Although the game is in mid-December...Oswego could be looking at playing three different teams that all *should* have or were in the NCAA Tournament in a span of four games.

We'll see what the new crop of players can do during that stretch.
GreatLakerMohawk:
There's a word I've heard lately that best describes that schedule:

Brutes.
mdmadison:
I guess if you've got a new group of players coming in and nobody expects a run to the NCAA or the league championship from this team because of the loss of so many seniors, why not introduce them into the world of NCAA D3 hockey and what it means to play at a championship level. I think this team will need to step it up to compete and those that don't, someone will be waiting to replace them on the starting roster.
Russell Jaslow:
I had hints of this schedule, but was waiting for it to be released before making a comment.

Why is Potsdam/Plattsburgh playing at Oswego/Cortland in the second semester just like last year? I always thought they reversed the order every year.

More specifically, why would Plattsburgh want their big second, and potentially league title deciding, game at Oswego when it should be their turn to host the late game? (All Plattsburgh dominating Oswego jokes aside...)

Hince is History at Plattsburgh

Reigning SUNYAC Player of the Year Bryan Hince is leaving SUNY Plattsburgh to play hockey professionally. Plattsburgh student newspaper Cardinal Points had the story:

SUNYAC MVP Hince: I'm going pro
Matt Rosenberg
Associate Sports Editor

After spending two seasons between the pipes for the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team, 2008-09 SUNYAC most valuable player Bryan Hince said he is leaving PSUC in favor of playing professionally.

A post on Hince’s Facebook account had written he was leaving for the Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League (CHL) and also thanked the Plattsburgh fans for their support of him over the last two years.

“The tuition is too much for me to afford,” Hince said. “I've loved my years here and hope all the rest of the teams the best.”

Hince said the increased tuition at PSUC put him in a financial hole. He said it would cost nearly $23,000 dollars for him to return next year.

The CHL, based in Phoenix, is in its 17th year of existence and contains 16 teams in the central and western U.S.

Hince’s PSUC career ends with him being on the most celebrated goalies in the programs history.

In two seasons, he played in 53 games, going 44-7-2 with a 1.98 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage.

He was named SUNYAC Goaltender of the Week nine times this past season and made 55 combined saves in the SUNYAC semifinals and finals.

"If that’s the road he wants to take, then I wish him the best," PSUC Head Coach Bob Emery said. " We have to obviously replace a goalie that had two solid years. But that’s our job. We've had to replace a lot of great goalies over the years."

Cardinalhockey.net has three goalie recruits listed on its recruit watch. Hince’s backup, Chris Molinaro, is a senior and will be graduating. Freshman Matt Dickson is the lone remaining goaltender.

Hince will be coached by former Cardinal Tony Martino. Martino, a former goalie, spent three seasons with the Cards between 1986-88 and compiled 26 wins in that time.

“I can't wait to start my pro career," Hince said. “It's a fun time in my life right now.”

Tulsa offices were closed and management could not be reached Sunday. Oilers offices are slated to reopen Tuesday.

Now, I give you Bryan Hince's final collegiate victory:
