Hoops Programs Extend Winning Streaks

The Oswego State women's basketball team defeated Morrisville 49-40 on Tuesday night at Max Ziel Gymnasium in Oswego. Oswego State's four-game winning streak has them back over .500 at 9-8 overall this season, and 4-5 in the SUNY Athletic Conference. Morrisville remained winless at 0-13 overall and 0-9 in the SUNYAC.

In a sloppy first half, Oswego State built a nine-point halftime lead at 27-18. That nine-point margin held up in the second half, as Driscoll scored eight of her 18 points after the break. Sarah Lombard added nine points for the Lakers and seven rebounds. Traci Bacon also had seven rebounds in the game. The Lakers will play on the road this weekend, at SUNYIT on Friday and at Cortland on Saturday. Both games begin at 6 p.m.

The men's basketball team turned a one-point halftime deficit into a big lead in the second half, and held on for an 83-78 win over Morrisville in a SUNY Athletic Conference game on Tuesday night at Max Ziel Gymnasium in Oswego. The Lakers had four players score in double figures, led by Tommy Downing with 24 points including six 3-pointers. Mahamoud Jabbi added 18, Nick Perioli scored 14, and Kyle Reuter finished the game with 13 for Oswego State.

After trailing 38-37 at halftime, the Lakers outscored Morrisville 35-15 to start the second half and held a 19-point lead with six and a half minutes remaining. Morrisville started to get baskets off of penetration and forced some Oswego State turnovers to get back into the contest, eventually cutting the lead to just three points in the final minute, but a pair of free throws by Downing sealed the victory.

Oswego State improved to 13-4 overall and 7-2 in the SUNYAC with their fifth straight win, while Morrisville is 4-11 and 1-8 in the conference. The Lakers return to action on Friday at SUNYIT and Saturday at Cortland. Both games begin at 8 p.m.

After a save by Castleton State goalie Vanessa Carter, Kirkwood pounced on the rebound just outside the crease and beat the goalie just below the glove for the game-winner.

Oswego State fell behind 1-0 on a first-period goal by Castleton State's Amy Costa, but the Lakers tied the score in the second period as Erica Shapey scored on an assist from Brenna Weber.

The Lakers outshot the Spartans 48-27 in the game and Oswego State goalie Hilary Hitchman made 26 saves to earn the victory.

Sweep! Cards Go 2-For-2 Against Lakers

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- For 64 minutes, it looked as though the SUNYAC regular season-title race would be a dogfight until the end. Then, with a simple left-wing wrister from sophomore Ward Smith (pictured), the Plattsburgh Cardinals took a commanding five-point lead in the conference standings.

Plattsburgh (17-2-0, 10-0-0) earned a 3-2 overtime victory over Oswego State in a match-up of SUNYAC powerhouses. They also completed a regular season sweep over the Lakers for the first time since the 2003-2004 season.

Senior goaltender Ryan Scott stopped a season-high 37 shots. His effort kept the Lakers in the game despite the fact they were out-shot 20-4 over the game's final 24:07. Overall, Plattsburgh put 40 shots on Scott. The last coming off the stick of Smith, whose marker sent the hometown crowd into a frenzy and his teammates pouring onto the ice.

That same crowd had been on pins and needles at the start of the third period as they found their team in an unfamiliar spot...trailing. The Cardinal faithful had only seen their club trail after two periods one other time this season. Meanwhile, the Lakers had won 12 straight when leading after 40 minutes.

Laker assistant captain Kyle McCutcheon single-handedly gave Oswego State (11-5-2, 7-2-1) the lead midway through the second. The senior defenseman bumped an attacker off the puck in the defensive zone, carried the puck coast-to-coast, and wristed a shot past freshman standout Brian Hince for a 2-1 lead.

McCutcheon's goal was a quick answer to Plattsburgh's game-tying power play marker just minutes earlier. Freshman Dan Sliasis had scored on a feed from Dylan Clarke at the 7:12 mark to bring a small flurry of tennis balls onto the ice and even the game at 1-1. Five of Sliasis' six goals this season have come on home ice. No delay-of-game penalties were called for the tennis ball-toss.

The Lakers lit the lamp first in the game's 11th minute on a two-on-one rush as Brendan McLaughlin put home a rebound off a shot by line-mate Peter Magagna. The goal was McLaughlin's eighth on the year and extended his points streak to nine straight games. It also gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead; Oswego State had won 12 straight when scoring first coming into the match-up.

The Lakers maintain a one-point advantage over Fredonia for second-place in the SUNYAC. Oswego State will try to earn two points Saturday at 7 p.m. at Potsdam. The game will be featured on FSN television (Time Warner Cable channel 54 in CNY). The Cards look to pad their comfortable conference lead against Cortland Saturday at 7 p.m. The Red Dragons led Plattsburgh 1-0 after two periods in their first meeting this season.

Senior guard Nick Perioli scored a season-high 27 points and also added seven assists for the Lakers, who are now 11-4 on the season and improved to 5-2 in the conference. Sophomore forward Mahamoud Jabbi added 24 points on 12-of-17 shooting and also had four rebounds and three blocked shots.

The Lakers trailed 16-6 five minutes into the game but worked back in the first half and trailed by just two at halftime, largely due to Tommy Downing's 14 first-half points.

Oswego State took the lead early in the second half on a 3-pointer by Perioli and never trailed again. They stretched the lead to as many as 11 points and held off one final Buffalo State charge for the victory.

Downing (16 points) and Kyle Reuter (13 points) also scored in double-figures for Oswego State. Dom White had five points and eight rebounds.

Dion Mozelle scored 22 points and had 17 rebounds for the Bengals, who are now 4-9 overall and 2-5 in the SUNYAC.

Oswego State hosts Fredonia on Saturday at 8 p.m. while Buffalo State visits Morrisville.

The Oswego State women's basketball team made its first six 3-point attempts of the second half to pull away from visiting Buffalo State en route to a 69-41 win over the Bengals at Max Ziel Gymnasium in Oswego on Friday night.

Sarah Lombard led the Lakers with 16 points and Sam Driscoll finished the game with 14.

The Lakers rallied from slow start with a pair of 12-2 runs that turned an early seven-point deficit into a nine-point halftime lead, and never trailed again. Oswego State came out of the locker room and found its range in the second half, connecting on six 3-pointers to turn the game into a rout.

Heather Merino added nine points and six rebounds for the Lakers and Alaina Hannahs and Traci Bacon each scored eight points.

Toya Parks led Buffalo State with 13 points.

Oswego State is now 7-8 overall and 2-5 in the SUNYAC while Buffalo State fell to 5-11 overall and 1-6 in the conference.

The Lakers trailed for most of the first half, but a late surge sent them to the locker room with a 34-29 halftime lead. The Lakers never trailed in the second half, stretching the lead to as many as 11 points and seeing the Pioneers cut the margin to just two on a pair of occasions, but Oswego State answered each time.

The Lakers finished the game 23-of-33 from the free-throw line and made 16 of their first 17 free-throw attempts in the game.

Collins and Driscoll led the way with 20 points each, and Heather Merino added 13 for Oswego State. Jenny Brewer (pictured) made a pair of 3-pointers and had eight points in the contest. Collins also had 13 rebounds and Alaina Hannahs had nine rebounds and five assists.

Spread Scoring Attack Stifles 'Stangs

The Oswego State men's ice hockey team had nine different players score as they beat Morrisville 9-1 in non-conference action Tuesday night at the Campus Center Ice Arena in Oswego.

The Lakers wide-spread scoring attack was led by three-point efforts from Matt Whitehead and Joe Hall. Hall scored the game-winner, his fifth goal of the year at the 13:14 mark of the first period to put the Lakers up 2-0.

Ryan Ellis scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season just 16 seconds later to push the lead to 3-0. The goal extended Ellis' point streak to seven consecutive games. Linemate Brendan McLaughlin equaled that streak with a goal in the second period. Ellis assisted on the marker.

Oswego State's senior co-captains continued their respective streaks as well. Tony DiNunzio scored a goal for the third straight game at the 1:01 mark of the third period. He has four goals during a three-game goal streak. C.J. Thompson played in his 100th career game for the Lakers. He has dressed in every game of his Oswego State career, and scored his seventh goal of the season in the third period.

Oswego State starting goalie Ryan Scott made 14 saves and earned the victory. Matt Wolf (pictured) replaced Scott for the final 4:02 and made four saves, including three during a Morrisville 5-on-3 power play late in the game.

Chatham Snaps 97-Game Winless Streak

The Chatham Cougars ended yet another lengthy streak of futility against Oswego State Sunday with a 4-3 victory. April Govednik recorded a goal and two assists as the Cougars ended a 97-game winless streak. Chatham had not won a game since joining the ECAC West in 2002.

The Cougars looked poised to take advantage of inexperienced goaltender Emi Williams from the start. Williams was starting for just the second time in her freshman season and making her third appearance overall. She allowed four goals on 12 shots before being pulled in the opening minute of the second period in favor of Hillary Hitchman.

"(Williams) made some nice stops," said second-year head coach Diane Dillon. "But when something like that happens you gotta shake the team up somehow. It was changing the goalie in this case."

The Lakers responded positively to the change. Hitchman stopped all 13 shots she faced, allowing her club to close the gap on a 4-1 Chatham lead. Defenseman Kendall Hanley displayed nifty stick-handling as she scored her first goal as a Laker midway through the third period to cut the Cougar lead to two. Hanley moved the puck up the right wing before angling in towards the slot, moving the puck to her backhand, and lighting the lamp.

Minutes later, Gillian Toneguzzo scored her first collegiate marker to make it a one-goal game with 3:03 left to play. Dillon would pull her net-minder in favor of an extra attacker with just over a minute to play. The Lakers got several cracks at the net, but were unable to capitalize despite keeping the puck in Chatham's end until the final seconds.

"I'm gonna have about 75 more gray hairs tomorrow and I almost wanted to vomit," said first-year Cougar coach Phoebe Manchester. "It's that feeling of either this is gonna happen again, or we're gonna do it. We got the bounces."

Chatham had earned a tie last season against the Lakers to end a streak of 73 consecutive losses. Overall, Oswego State still leads the all-time series 6-1-1. Sunday's loss may prove detrimental to the Lakers' playoff hopes, a win would have tied them with Buffalo State for the sixth and final playoff spot in the ECAC West. Now the Lakers are tied with Chatham for eighth in the conference with each team at two points.

"Hopefully this will be a little bit of a catalyst for us," said Dillon. "This was a real kick in the pants. This is a wake up call for us to work harder. We've got a little over a month left in the season and it's all-out from here on out."

The Lakers return to the ice Jan. 27 when they visit Castleton State. They'll finish the season with eight straight conference games starting Feb. 2 at Cortland.

Ryan Maloney

NOTES:
  • Coach Dillon said second-leading scorer Staphanie Esposito missed the Chatham series due to a knee injury suffered in Minnesota. The club hopes to have her back soon.
  • The Lakers returned to the ice to skate with the fans following the game.
  • This was the second time in as many nights that a lenghty ECAC West streak had been snapped. Top-ranked Plattsburgh lost to RIT on Saturday marking the end of a 39-game unbeaten streak in conference play. It was also the first time the Cards lost a conference game at home since their inaugural season in 2001-02 (43 games).
  • WNYO broadcast the game live and you can hear it in the archives in the box at the top right-hand corner of the site.

By the Way...Men's Hoops Won Last Night

The Oswego State men's basketball team saw a big second half lead evaporate, but made big plays down the stretch in a 77-74 win at Geneseo on Saturday.

The Lakers led from the opening basket of the game and built a 19-point advantage at 53-34 with 16:30 left in the game on a Kyle Reuter layup. Geneseo rallied to tie the game with 3:50 left and took a 71-70 lead on a free throw by Scott Morton with 2:32 left to play.

A jumper by Nick Perioli put the Lakers back in front and a 3-pointer by Kase Kinney with 28 seconds left stretched the Laker lead to four points in the last minute. Geneseo made a layup, but Reuter nailed two free throws with four seconds left to seal the victory.

Reuter led the Lakers with 30 points and made seven 3-pointers in the game. Nick Perioli had 16 points and seven assists, and Mahamoud Jabbi added 11 points. The Lakers committed only 11 turnovers in the game.

Oswego State is now 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the SUNYAC. They will host Utica in a non-conference game on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Max Ziel Gymnasium.

Women's Hockey Earns 1st Conference Win

The Oswego State women's ice hockey team began their climb up the ECAC West standings with a 3-1 victory over Chatham at the Campus Center Ice Arena. Jessica Lister lit the lamp 34 seconds in off a feed from Erica Shapey and the Lakers never looked back. The marker was Lister's team-leading fifth of the season. Defenceman Erica Rossi also received credit for an assist on the play.

Freshman Brenna Weber recorded her first collegiate goal midway through the first period on a writer from the left-wing faceoff circle. Lister was credited with a helper. That would stand up as the game-winner after Chatham's April Govednik scored her first goal of the season to start the second period.

Govednik's shot would be the only one to slip past Laker netminder Hillary Hitchman. The sophomore stopped 26 shots en route to her fourth win in goal.

"(Hitchman) made some top-end saves, some clutch reaction saves on some tight rebounds where we had breakdowns in defensive zone coverage," said second-year head coach Diane Dillon. "Her game has come along so much. She's playing with a renewed confidence and I think it's clear to see why she's out number one goaltender."

Many of Hitchman's saves came with her team on the penalty kill. The Lakers had 33 penalty minutes on the day, including a five-minute major and game misconduct to Shapey for checking from behind. Dillon questioned the official's decision to send the freshman pivot off, but knew why the call was made.

"I'm afraid that's the way the rule reads. Any hit from behind is an automatic. Was there intent there? No. But it clearly was a hit from behind, so that's an automatic ten."

Oswego State was able to kill off that five-minute penalty and were succesful on 9-of-10 penalty kills for the game. The Lakers imorved to 5-9-1 on the season with the win, 1-6-0 in the ECAC West. Chatham fell to 0-16-0 on the year, 0-9-0 in conference.

Women's Hoops Drops 6th Straight

The Oswego State women's basketball team lost 60-56 at Geneseo Saturday afternoon. The loss marks the sixth straight for the Lakers and second in as many days. Genseo has won three of four after starting the season 1-9.

Senior guard Sam Driscoll (pictured) was a hot hand for Oswego State connecting on 5-of-11 from thee-point range to finish with 17 points. As a team the Lakers shot just 30% on the night.

Senior Annie Verdino led all scorers with 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Knights. Amanda Haney had a double-double of her own with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Brockport Pummels Lakers

The Golden Eagles led for the game's final 37 minutes and 36 seconds en route to a 90-76 conference victory. Brockport pulled down 25 rebounds at the offensive end and coverted that into 33 second-chance points. For the game, the Eagles out-rebounded Oswego State 52-35.

Junior guard Tommy Downing led the Lakers with 18 points and six assists. Senior co-captain Dom White shot 5-for-7 from the field to add 10 points before leaving the game with an apparent knee injury. Sophomore Mahamoud Jabbi also reached double-figures with 12 points. The normally-potent back court duo of Nick Perioli and Kyle Reuter was held to just 12 points.

Brockport also managed to put three scorers in double figures, all led by a 25-point, 10 rebound effort from senior forward Brandon Williams. Pre-season All-American Sherod Harris added 13 points while sophomore Cantrel Parrish tallied 18.

Men's Hoops Down Big at Brockport

Oswego State men's hoops finds themselves down 63-43 midway thru the second half in Brockport. Three Golden Eagles are already in double-figures, including defending co-SUNYAC Player of the Week Sherod Harris. Laker point guard Nick Perioli, the man Harris shared that honor with, has been held to six points on 2-of-7 shooting.

Brockport's basketball announcers have just confirmed that Brockport hockey overcame a 3-0 deficit to beat Morrisville 4-3. The Mustangs are now 0-15-0 in their first official season of SUNYAC play. They beat Brockport and Cortland last season in non-conference games.

Poor Shooting Dooms Lakers in 2nd Half

The Oswego State women's basketball team lost 58-48 at the Tuttle North Gym in Brockport Friday night. The Lakers led 45-42 after a three-pointer by Freshman Traci Bacon with just 4:21 left in the game. The Golden Eagles responded with a 9-0 run over the next 2:20 and never looked back.

Sam Driscoll (pictured) led Oswego State in scoring despite another poor shooting performance. Driscoll netted 12 points on 3-of-14 shooting, including 1-for-5 from behind the arc. She is 13-of-62 (.209) from the field and 6-0f-24 (.250) from long-range during Oswego State's current five-game losing streak.

As a team the Lakers shot just 30% from the floor and committed 22 turnovers. The Eagles did not fare much better as they shot just 34%, including a 2-for-16 three-point performance. Capitalizing on turnovers seemed to be the difference in the game as Brockport was able to convert the Lakers' mistakes into 21 points. Oswego State could only convert 10 points off of 16 Eagle turnovers.

Brockport streched their ECAC West lead to three-and-a-half games over the Lakers. The Eagles are 4-0 in conference play and 11-2 overall. Meanwhile, Oswego State's skid has put their conference mark at 1-4 with an overall record of 5-7. The Lakers look to get back to their winning ways tomorrow at Geneseo. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 P.M.

Women's Hoops Lead 21-18 at Half

Oswego State (5-6, 1-3) women's hoops lead Brockport (10-2, 3-0) 21-18 at the half. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the game's first three and a half minutes, but the Lakers answered with a 19-9 run to close out the half.

Rachel Kohrs connected on a pair of three-pointers and leads all scorers with eight points. Senior guard Alaina Hannahs is back in the lineup for the first time since Dec. 4. Oswego State went 2-4 during the point guard's six-game absence.

It's good to see former Christian Brothers Academy point guard Greg Paulus popping up in the blogs today. Paulus brought his flopping A-game into Tallahassee last night. The officials and commentators fell hook, line, and sinker. Duke won 70-57 to improve to 14-1, 2-0 in the ACC.

FOX 11 Heismans Eli; Osi Steams the Ladies

WLUK FOX 11 in Wisconsin is doing their part to make sure Eli Manning has a rough stay in town. The station normally airs Seinfeld reruns at 5:30 P.M. on Saturday afternoons, but not this weekend. Apparently the station caught wind of the fact that Manning's favorite show just happens to be Seinfeld. They have pulled the show from their programming schedule and are allowing their viewers to pick a replacement:

I'm sure this strategy will be equally effective as Lawrence Taylor's.

Meanwhile, on the defensive front it would appear as though Osi Umenyiora had some odd requests granted by a female acquaintance. Said acquaintance has now created a blog to tell all about the experience. Warning, she used a nude photo of herself as the page header. Allegedly, Osi doesn't like toilets all that much. There is no way of telling how valid this story is. It is simply a blog written by an unnamed person, but it is very entertaining.

Women's Hockey Gets a W

The Oswego State women's ice hockey team got two goals from Emily Grippin and 37 saves from Hilary Hitchman in a 4-1 win over St. Benedict on Tuesday night in St. Cloud, Minn.

The Lakers are now 4-9-1 on the season and return home for two ECAC Women's West games this weekend against Chatham at the Campus Center Ice Arena on Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m.

Grippin opened the scoring for the Lakers midway through the first period with an unassisted goal. St. Benedict answered three minutes later on a tally by Michelle Eberhard.

Oswego State went on to score the last three goals of the contest. Tiffany Duquette scored her first of the season on an assist from Mackenzie May in the second period, and Ashley Meyers and Grippin added third-period goals for the Lakers.

American "Idle": Behind the Curtain

From August 25-27, 2007, I was in Philadelphia to observe the audition process of American Idol. Now on the heels of the show's season seven dubut, I recount the experience:The Wachovia Center has seen its share of finely-trained musicians practice their craft within its walls in front of thousands of raucous Philadelphia fans. From Elton John to Justin Timberlake and Garth Brooks to Beyonce, a wide assortment of acts brought their platinum-selling sound to the arena. On August 27, 2007, more than 20,000 vocal hopefuls jammed into the venue for their shot at singing stardom. Producers for FOX's American Idol were in town to put together the cast of season seven characters.

REGISTRATION
The crowd began to form at the Wachovia Center entrance in the wee hours of Saturday morning. This was just phase one of the whole ordeal. Contestants were to begin registering for the audition at 6 A.M. on Aug. 25. The actual auditions would not begin for another 50 hours.

Back in Oswego, NY, I lay sound asleep in my bed. I would not leave for Philadelphia for another 15 hours. Once there, I waltzed right up to the registration table, watched my friend (the auditioning one) sign the two of us in, and retreated to a hotel.

"Idiots," I thought out loud. "Tens of thousands of people waited in line for hours for that."

DOWNTIME

Sunday was for sightseeing. While thousands more arrived at the Wachovia Center to register, my friend and I took in some of the sights that the City of Brotherly Love had to offer. We also went to see Superbad. The movie features a scene in which a cop refers to his ex-wife as a whore. Pretty funny. More funny if you'd had a similar conversation with your buddies about an ex-flame. Extremely funny when said flame is sitting next to you at the movie, is aware of the fact that you've had said conversation, and is also aware that the memory of said conversation coupled with her presence is what is causing you to laugh noticeably louder than everyone else in the theater.

AUDITION

Fast forward to Monday morning. I am up. The sun is not. Never a situation I enjoy. Auditions are set to begin at 8 A.M. but participants are encouraged to show up 90 minutes prior. For a female this means waking up 90 minutes prior to that prior so that you can do your hair, make-up, nails, etc. For a male accompanying a demanding female, this means you are also getting up two and a half hours before you should have to.

We arrive at the Wachovia Center and it is still dark. There is a line of cars waiting to park at Lincoln Financial Field. We pay $11 to park...correction, I pay $11 to park. Then we walk across the street to the Wachovia Center parking lot. There are already more than 15,000 people standing in line. We take our place towards the back and watch the helicopters above. FOX has three choppers in the air for an aerial shot that they'll use for less than five seconds on the show.

We would be waiting in line outside for more than an hour. During this time the FOX cameras were shooting us from above and also on the ground in a golf cart-type vehicle. Additionally, Jay Leno had sent Steve Schirripa (pictured) of Sopranos fame to mingle with the crowd and conduct interviews for The Tonight Show.

Finally, they let the crowd inside. Everyone had a ticket with an assigned seat. You were to sit in that seat and only that seat for the duration of the audition. Our seats were in the upper bowl of the arena. This was going to take forever.

To start out, one of the preliminary judges hopped on a microphone and conducted a few crowd warm-ups. I found it amazing how 20,000 people actually silenced themselves and listened to every word this man had to say. He explained how the whole audition process would go down. About 15 tables were set up on the arena floor with black curtains seperating each one from the next. Contestants would come up one arena section at a time. They would empty out the lower bowl before they got to the top half of the arena. This would be right about the time that I realized the value of coming to register early.

The judge then led the entire arena in singing the chorus of Joan Jett's I Love Rock and Roll...for ten whole minutes. Finally, Ryan Seacrest came out and got the crowd ready to shoot the opening of the show. On the count of three we all shouted, "This is American Idol!" and then screamed like pre-pubescent school gorls until they told us to stop. This took several takes, we were sheep.

For the next 13 hours we watched section after section get up and approach the judges. Whenever the crowd could hear someone with a powerful voice, they'd cheer. If that singer was allowed on to the next round, they'd cheer louder. If not, they'd boo. Seeing as how the judges are extremely tough and that this was Philadelphia, there was going to be a lot of booing.

Women's Hockey Looks to End Skid Tonight

OSWEGO - Oswego State senior point guard Nick Perioli was named SUNYAC Men's Basketball Co-Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 13, 2008. Perioli shared the weekly award with Brockport's Sherod Harris.

Nick Perioli is a native of Liverpool and graduate of Liverpool High School.
Perioli led the Lakers to a 2-1 record on the week with a pair of SUNYAC wins at home over New Paltz and Oneonta, and a non-league loss at St. Lawrence. The point guard had 16 assists and just one turnover in the three games, and set a new Oswego State record for career steals. Perioli now has 188 steals in his Laker career, passing the old record of 186 which was held by Jeff Williams, who played for the Lakers from 1997-2001.

Perioli averaged 18.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game in the three contests last week, including 23 against Oneonta in a 79-73 Oswego State win. Perioli was 8-for-8 from the free throw line on Saturday and was 13-for-14 on the week.

Women's Ice Hockey Swept by St. Olaf

The Oswego State women's ice hockey team continues to struggle. St. Olaf completed a weekend sweep over the Lakers with a 2-1 victory this afternoon at the Northfield Ice Rink in Minnesota. The Oles had lost 5 of 7 prior to the two-game set with Oswego State. The Lakers have now gone winless in 10 of their last 11.

St. Olaf opened the scoring in the game's ninth minute on a marker by freshman Tori Heinonen. It was Heinonen's first goal as an Ole. The Lakers evened things up less than five minutes later on Stephanie Esposito's (pictured) third goal of the season. But the Oles responded with just over three minutes remaining in the opening period. This time it was Heidi Morse lighting the lamp for the first time this season. That would stand up as the game-winner as the Oles and Lakers skated a scoreless 43:15 to the final horn.

The Lakers fall to 3-9-1 on the season. They'll play at St. Benedict on Tuesday night before returning home for a two-game ECAC West match-up with Chatham Jan. 19 and Jan. 20. You can catch both of those games on 88.9 FM WNYO beginning at 3 P.M.

The Oswego State Lakers were barely in the top 15 last poll, coming in at #14. Since then, the Lakers have gone 2-1-0 with a win over #13 New England College. Will the Lakers fall from the poll for the first time in Ed Gosek's tenure? Check back with WNYOsports.com later this afternoon to find out.

Oswego State 4, New England College 3

The Oswego State men's ice hockey team defeated New England College 4-3 on Saturday evening at the Campus Center Ice Arena in Oswego.

The victory by the Lakers improved Oswego State's record to 9-4-2 on the season and it was the first loss of the year for the Pilgrims, who are now 7-1-1. New England College entered the game ranked 13th in the latest USCHO.com Division III Men's Poll while Oswego State was ranked 14th.

The Lakers built three two-goal leads in the game only to see the Pilgrims answer each time and reduce the margin to a one-goal advantage.

Oswego State got off to a good start when Ryan Ellis scored on a breakaway with 8:28 remaining in the first period. The goal was the team-leading ninth of the year for Ellis, assisted by Brendan McLaughlin and Peter Magagna.

The Lakers extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal by Joe Hall two minutes later on a wrister from the right wing circle, assisted by Chris Laganiere and C.J. Thompson.

New England College got on the board late in the first when Mark Ehl scored his eighth of the year on a rebound off a shot by Mike Carmody.

The teams traded goals in the second and third periods. Oswego State's Tony DiNunzio (pictured) scored his first of the season on a wraparound just 19 seconds in the middle period and Brian Pouliot scored on a 5-on-3 power play for the Pilgrims with 4:40 left in the second.

In the third, McLaughlin scored for the Lakers and Mike Mullen scored for New England College.

The Pilgrims pulled the goalie in the final minute of the game, but couldn't get a good scoring chance against Oswego State and goalie Ryan Scott, who finished the game with 17 saves. New England College goalie Ron Baia made 22 saves in the contest.

It was Oswego State's first win against a ranked team this season and the Lakers improved to 9-0-0 on the season when leading after two periods. The Lakers return to action on Tuesday at Hamilton College. The game begins at 7 p.m.

CanAm Semifinal at Wold Juniors

The 2008 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship has been surreal for Canadian hockey fans. They saw their countrymen lose in round-robin play for the first time in six years. Two days later, their youngest player guaranteed guaranteed that his Canadian team would win the gold. John Tavares, 17, and Team Canada beat Finland 4-2 this morning in the quarterfinal round to draw one step closer to that bold proclamation.

Boston Bruin draft pick Brad Marchand scored the game-winner midway through the third period. Marchand had cost the Canadians in round-robin play with a late giveaway against Sweden in a 4-3 loss on Dec. 29. That loss meant Canada had to play in the quarterfinal round rather than have a bye into the semifinals.

The Canadians will now face the United States in Friday's semifinal round at 2 p.m. EST (NHL Network). The Canadians beat the Americans twice in Sweden en route to the 2007 World Junior title, including a 2-1 shootout victory in the semifinal round. The Americans would have to settle for bronze. This season, the U.S. went a perfect 4-0-0-0 in round-robin play to earn the bye into the semis.

The Canadians haven't lost a playoff-round World Junior game since January 5, 2004. That's when Team USA beat a 16-year-old Sidney Crosby and Team Canada 4-3 to claim their first World Junior Championship gold medal.

Below is a video clip of the 2007 shootout between the U.S. and Canada:
