TWO TEAMS, TWO DIFFERENT STORIES (ONE HASN'T BEEN WRITTEN YET)
You know what a shocker that SU won against Louisville Cardinals, but the true question is can they hold there own against Miami (OH). I mean SU is scrappy at best and there defense could pull off a miracle is an understatement. But when you look at Miami (OH) and how’d they got beaten so badly against
And in other sports news, WTF were the Mets thinking when they’ve slipped five games won 2 out of the last what 6 games they’ve played. They have relatively a weak schedule towards the end of the season. And they’re losing to teams like the Marlins, Nationals and of course the Phillies. It’s like you guys have had first place for months and now you decided to bail out and start slumping. I mean I know our bullpen is beaten up and Billy Wagner is injured but c’mon we have the depth in our hitters to score but we’re not doing it. It’s like WTF you guys are garbage this is why we get no respect from our fellow New Yorkers at times because we got the payroll but the attitude isn’t there.

Pat Morgan's Week 3 Recap
Ravens 26, Cardinals 23; For the second straight week the Ravens almost blew a 17 point, fourth quarter lead. Kurt Warner replaced Matt Leinart and led the Cards back to a 23-23 tie, but a good last minute drive set up a 46-yard winning field goal from Matt Stover. After two lackluster fourth quarters from their defense, the Ravens are lucky to be 2-1. I didn't like the personal foul call on Adrian Wilson that gave the Ravens 15 yards on their final drive. Ugly hit on Todd Heap, but I thought it was clean.
Packers 31, Chargers 24; Really stunned by the outcome of this game. I thought the Chargers would come out firing today after that embarrassing loss in New England. Credit the Packers' defense for being the third team in a row to slience LT. Brett Favre is off to his best season in years as the Packers improve to 3-0. The Pack's next three games (@ Min, Chi, Wash) are very winnable. Can you imagine this team 6-0? Wow! As for the Chargers, I still think they'll be fine in the AFC West, but they are giving up serious ground to the Pats and Colts for those precious first round byes.
Colts 30, Texans 24; Not the close game the final score would seem to indicate. A very ho-hum type of victory for the Colts as Peyton and co. won without sexy numbers. But they made no mistakes and took advantage of every situation. Might as well give them the AFC South division crown as they have won two road games within the division that they lost last season. The Texans fought hard, but this game brings them back down to earth after two impressive wins to start the season.
Chiefs 13, Vikings 10; I'm surprised that there was even this much scoring. Vikes' defense played well and Adrian Peterson brutally outplayed Larry Johnson, but the Vikings lack of a QB cost them again. What's Drew Bledsoe doing? As for the Chiefs, this is a terrible football team that got lucky to win today. It's going to be a long, long season with their Pop Warner like offense.
Patriots 38, Bills 7; Those who thought Randy Moss wouldn't work out in New England need their heads examined. Moss working out in New England was about as sure a thing to me as Lindsay Lohan checking into rehab again. This Patriots team could go 16-0, and they would embrace it unlike the Colts of two years ago. The Bills are an awful football team who will be fighting for the #1 pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.
Eagles 56, Lions 21; The Eagles did everything right today (except for the throwbacks) to get off the decks and get their first win. I was amazed with how many people picked the Lions to win this game. Really shows how people buy into the week-to-week play of teams and not the entire body of work. The Eagles showed just how bad the Lions defense really is. They could have scored 70+ points if they really needed to today. Big reality check for the Lions as they'll lick their wounds and head home for a big divisional game with Chicago.
Steelers 37, 49ers 16; A game that shows just how much better the AFC is than the NFC. A third straight, very impressive win for the Steelers. With the Bengals 1-2 and the Ravens struggling late in games, the Steelers have emerged as the early team to beat in the AFC North. I also think, for the time being, the Steelers have surpassed the Chargers for the third best team in football. The 49ers are lucky to be 2-1 and not 0-3 this season. Like the Lions, the 49ers will head home for a big divisional matchup with the Seahawks.
Buccaneers 24, Rams 3; Jon Gruden is a tremendous coach. This team has had two dominating wins at home the last two weeks to open the season 2-1. If the Saints lose tomorrow, this division becomes wide-open and there's no reason the Bucs can't win it. The Rams are finished as they have lost 3 of the "easy" games on their schedule.
Jaguars 23, Broncos 14; The Broncos might be the worst 2-1 team ever in NFL history. After two, at-the-gun field goals against the dregs of the NFL, the Broncos laid a big egg at home against a Jaguars team that looked awful the first two weeks as well. But somehow the Broncos are in first place in the AFC West. The Jaguars are 2-1 as well. While the top 3 (NE, Indy, Pitt) in the AFC have been very impressive, the eventual wildcard teams could come limping home. Enormous difference between the wildcard contenders like Denver and Jacksonville and the big daddies in New England and Indianapolis.
Raiders 26, Browns 24; It's funny how history repeats itself sometimes, as the Raiders got to use a last breath timeout on a field goal this time. The NFL needs to do something about this though as it is getting really messy at the end of these games. Defensive timeouts need to be called before everyone is set. Freezing the kicker is overrated anyway, and its more of a fluke that its worked the last two Oakland games. Browns' QB Derek Anderson game back to earth after his Cincy game. How many people picked him up in fantasy this week? Good win for the Raiders who have played well (for their standards) the first three weeks.
Seahawks 24, Bengals 21; The Bengals' defense played a heck of a lot better. However, they couldn't hold the Seahawks from scoring late. Then to make matters worse they fumbled the ensuing kickoff to eliminate any late second chance of their own. But winning 3,000 miles from home is never easy, and this would have been a tough game for the Bengals to win even if they had been playing well. Good bounce back win for the Seahawks as they improve to 2-1 and get set for a showdown with SF next week.
Panthers 27, Falcons 20; Without Delhomme late, the Panthers found a way to eek out a victory. The bi-polar Panthers had a big game from DeShaun Foster on the ground. The Falcons should start Leftwich at QB, and see if that sparks the team.
Giants 24, Redskins 17; Enormous comeback win for the Giants. Down 17-3 at the half, it looked like the Giants were on their way to an 0-3 start. That would have meant a Redskins 3-0 start, and in effect a quick elimination from winning the division. Give the Giants' defense credit who were torched the first two weeks of the season. Jason Campbell was lucky to lead the Skins as far down field as he did on the final drive. They had much more time left than they played like they had. Didn't need to spike the ball on 1st and Goal, and they simply rushed the 3rd and 4th down rushes.
Cowboys 34, Bears 10; Cowboys making a great case for themselves as the best team in the NFC. Their offense has been very, very good the first three weeks (45, 37, 34). A terrible loss for the Bears. I thought people started jumping on Grossman too soon last year, but I can't defend his sorry play any longer. Is Brian Griese the answer? Probably not. With the trade deadline looming, maybe it's time for the Bears to go shopping. Their defense in the 2nd half was even worse. This Bears' defense is so overrated as they never come up big in the big game.
Titans 31, Saints 14; A horrible start for the NFC favorite, New Orleans Saints. They can still win a weak NFC South, but the 0-3 stat does not lie. Only a handful of teams have made it when starting that badly. The last was the '98 Bills. Bills' fans suddenly thinking we're not so bad! The Saints also lost Deuce for the season, making Reggie Bush the feature back. This will limit the trickery they can use with him. As for the Titans, this is an excellent win. The AFC South will be fun division to watch with all teams 2-1 or better.
Performance of the Week: Donovan McNabb. 21-26, 381 yards, 4TDs. Most of which was accomplished in the 1st half. Had they needed to score 70 to win today, McNabb probably would have thrown 10TDs today if he had to. Kevin Curtis was the beneficiary of McNabb's big day (11 catches, 221 yards, 3 TDs).
Goat of the Week: Rex Grossman & the Bears' D. As said before, the Bears' defense never plays well in the big spot. They are stat whores in games they should win. As for Rex, I wouldn't bench him yet, but you've got to believe it's coming fast. If you can, find Keith Olbermann's segment from Football Night in America that documented the many, many, many quarterbacks the Bears have had throughout the years.

Introducing Your 1st-Place Syracuse Orange
Of course, 'Cuse could not just pulverize the Cardinals and come away with a multiple possession victory. Instead, Andrew Robinson fumbled twice late in the game and the Cardinals converted the turnovers into TDs to make it a game.
Despite that, the Orange made many of their fans eat crow.
The forums have been chalk-full of messages calling for Greg Robinson's firing. 'Cuse fans have been impatient with the third installment of the G-Rob Orange. Syracuse started 0-3 for the first time since 1986, as opponents outscored them 128-32. The offensive line had allowed 18 sacks. Attendance for the last home game against Illinois was reported at a generous 34,000. AD Daryl Gross was reportedly upset with the lack of progress shown. All signs pointed to 0-12, and yes, that would include a loss to Buffalo.
The Orange came into Papa John's Stadium as 37-point underdogs. Thirty-seven points! According to Donnie Webb of the Post-Standard, the largest underdogs on record to win an NCAA football game were the 1985 Oregon State Beavers (+36, beat Washington 21-20) and the '85 UTEP Miners (+36, beat BYU 23-16). Now, keep in mind the Appalachian State-Michigan game had no line as odds makers just couldn't figure out how badly the Wolverines were going to crush the Mountaineers. Despite that, Syracuse's win over the Cardinals will probably go down as one of the biggest upsets in NCAA football history.
Now for the fun part...a look at one Louisville fan's pre-game blog:
I stray away from disparaging Syracuse too viciously. My best friend is a longsuffering Syracuse alum, with whom I have a yearly bet of a bottle of wine on the outcome of the football and basketball game. (The latter is usually a more heated affair -- which drained his senses after the Cards' unbelievable comeback victory at Freedom Hall last year.) The football game generally requires a hefty sum of points put up on my end in order to reap any oenophilic reward. He's shied away from the 37 points laid down by the pros; so if I want a dry Italian red Saturday night I'm going to have to put up 40 points. And so I did -- owing much to the Cards' need for vendetta after the loss to Kentucky...
Card fans have to deal with the Kentucky loss and future, if any, losses. Saturday's game against Syracuse won't be one of them. Jody Demling's weekly column The Book wasted no time in drawing a 70-7 analogy to hapless Murray State. I'm banking on a 63-14 win -- and a bottle of Sangiovese.

Oswego State caps solid weekend with 5-0 win over SUNYIT
GRAND RAPIDS OSWEGO - The Oswego State men's soccer team earned its second straight shutout victory, 5-0, over SUNYIT on Saturday to cap off the program's alumni weekend. The Lakers were led by a four-point effort from freshman midfielder Dean Gaetano.
Junior midfielder Mike Roorda broke a scoreless tie with his first goal of the season in the 33rd minute off an assist from Gaetano. Chris Carra started a second-half Laker surge in the 46th minute with his first goal of the season for a 2-0 lead. Felipe Cavalcanti pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 59th minute when he found the net for the second time this season.
Gaetano then added to his tally with another assist, this time to Michael Kincaid for his second goal of the season in the 70th minute. Just over a minute later they reversed roles when Kincaid assisted on Gaetano's first goal of the season.
The win improved Oswego State's record to 3-4-1 on the year, and 2-1-0 in SUNYAC play. The Wildcats fell to 3-4-0 on the year and 0-3-0 in the SUNYAC.
At halftime, the Lakers recognized the program's first championship team as members from the 1966 SUNYAC-title team were honored.

*** WOMEN'S SOCCER
Second straight win for Laker women's soccer team
The Oswego State women's soccer team won its second straight game by defeating SUNYIT 2-1 in double overtime in Utica on Saturday afternoon.
The Lakers came back late in the contest to earn the victory. Julie McCloskey scored for Oswego State with just 4:57 left to play in the second half to tie the score 1-1, and forward Mariana Bartonicek scored the game-winning goal 1:19 into the second overtime period to give the Lakers the victory.
SUNYIT took the lead early in the second half on an unassisted goal by Jane Burroughs that beat Oswego State goalkeeper Toby Klein, who finished the game with one save.
McCloskey's goal was assited by Tricia Sullivan, and McCloskey patiently waited on goalkeeper Laurel Hosmer to commit before shooting past her into the net. Bartonicek's game-winner was a shot from the left side that beat Hosmer into the top of the net.
The Lakers are now 2-1-0 in SUNYAC play and 2-4-0 overall. The Lakers will host Potsdam on Friday at 4 p.m. and Plattsburgh on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The host Red Dragons scored four goals in the first half, as Kathryn Kubaryk and Somer Shuffield each had a goal and an assist in the opening 35 minutes.
Oneonta extended the lead to 5-0 on a goal by Ainsley Stoll before Brittany Roetzer scored for Oswego State in the 58th minute on an assist from Lauren Mastriano. Kubaryk added her second goal of the game in the second half, and Oswego State's Lori Teaney scored off a rebound with 4:02 left in the match.
Laker goalie Jamie Scharfe made six saves in the game. Oneonta starting goalkeeper Erika Dombkowski played 49:27 and didn't allow a goal. Leslie Dauphinais played the last 20-plus minutes and allowed both Oswego State goals.
Oneonta held a 15-5 shots advantage and a 5-1 edge in penalty corners.
Oswego State plays at Utica on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

From the Mind of Oompah
Ben Berrios is a former DJ and Executive Board member of WNYO. In a move that I am sure to reget later, I have allowed Ben to post on this blog without editing. Some people call this man functionally retarded. We here at WNYO call him...actually, come to think of it we're the ones who labeled him functionally retarded. More on Berrios later, here is his first post:
You know when you have a team like the Patriots and a coach like Belichick (who was a guaranteed lock for the Hall, which he might be) is all besides the point let me say this as loud as possible, YOU CHEATED….YOUR COMPLETE AND UTTER GUTTER TRASH and in lame man terms YOU’RE GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In other exciting news in sports, according to an article posted on Yahoo Sports website the Patriots are ranked as the number one NFL team. I mean is this stupid they should have forfeited the game to Mangini and the JETS I mean clearly I know
Ben Berrios
Upon reading this, I feel as though I may have mislabeled Ben when I called him functionally retarded. During his time away from Oswego State his condition has clearly worsened, and he is now ginormously retarded. WNYO staffers are hard at work trying to de-code this post and will provide a translation as soon as possible. If you're asking yourself, "who is this man/thing?" read this.

O.J. Book Leak
This would be the book that was suddenly canceled last November only to be re-published (and re-titled by the family of Ron Goldman) this year.
Below is an excerpt:
I'm going to tell you a story you've never heard before, because no
one knows this story the way I know it. It takes place on the night
of June 12, 1994, and it concerns the murder of my ex-wife, Nicole
Brown Simpson, and her young friend, Ronald Goldman. I want
you to forget everything you think you know about that night
because I know the facts better than anyone. I know the players.
I've seen the evidence. I've heard the theories. And, of course, I've
read all the stories: That I did it. That I did it but I don't know I did
it. That I can no longer tell fact from fiction. That I wake up in the
middle of the night, consumed by guilt, screaming. Man, they even had me wondering, What if I did it?
Totally like that time my sister convinced me that I had shaved a penis into the dog's fur. Except, you know, no one got their throat slit open.

Pat Morgan Recaps Week 2
Despite the cheating, the Pats are the best team in football. The Chargers on the other hand should be embarrassed for hiring Norv Turner. With the talent that team has in place, don't you think they could have hired basically anyone? Stunning.
Wow! I thought the Texans would make this a closer game than people thought, but Matt Schaub and the Texans played great after an awful start to the game. Maybe, finally, the Texans can push for a playoff spot. The Panthers on the other hand, are a weird team to ponder. Don't take them in any knockout pool, you'll get burned. They also play much better on the road.
These two teams like to score big on each other. The Bengals aren't going anywhere with that defense. Former Cavs and Blazers' Guard, Derek Anderson will be a hot fantasy pickup this week, and will put the Brady Quinn watch on hold. And bye bye half of the elimination league.
Brett Favre looked like mid-90s Favre, well thanks to the Giants' D. How did the Giants defense become so suddenly dreadful. 80 points allowed in 2 games, OUCH! Packers' D very much improved, but do they have enough on offense to make a run? I think had the Oswego field hockey team not won their first game, WNYO Sports Director, Ryan Maloney might have killed someone.
Lions 20, Vikings 17/OT
Jackson 4 picks the story. Otherwise the Vikings win. Lions 2-0 is more shocking than Houston 2-0. Give John Kitna the courage award (or retard award) for playing the fourth and OT with a concussion.
Steelers 26, Bills 3
Going to be a long year in Buffalo. Pittsburgh impressive again on defense. Roethlisberger off to a good start after a poor '06 for obvious reasons.
Jaguars 13, Falcons 7
Joey Harrington vs. Jags' D, Enough said!
Ravens 20, Jets 13
Kellen Clemens' comeback attempt fails on two dropped TD passes by Justin McCareins. Haven't the Jets seen enough of him. Good effort from Kyle Boller, but thanks to the lack of a Jets pass rush it could have been me back there and I'd be able to make plays.
Cowboys 37, Dolphins 20
Trent Green 4 picks kept this game from being close. Dallas offense off to a really good start. Hung over from botched PAT in playoffs Romo? Nope.
Colts 22, Titans 20
Titans ran out of time on final drive. Colts in control most of the way. Defense not as good as last week, but good enough with Peyton tossing 300+ yards. Sorry Kige.
Bears 20, Chiefs 10
Kansas City has no offense, actually surprised they scored 10. Figured this was a big game for Grossman, and he played lousy again. Prediction: Donovan McNabb is the Bears' QB next season.
Shanahan's TO saves the Broncos from a huge upset. Oakland's D played really well in the 2nd half, and LaMont Jordan is off to a tremendous start. Cutler played well at times and like a rookie at others. Thank you for Travis Henry for making this an elimination pool survival game. Phew! And hey, there's 9 little TH's running around this world.
Buccaneers 31, Saints 14
Absolute shocker. Saints still hungover from Indy opener. Luckily for them, Panthers lost an awful game, and the Falcons and Bucs reside in this division. So no need for panic, but very discouraging.
Cardinals 23, Seahawks 20
Not really an upset as people picked it to be. Arizona is not a bad (well Cardinal bad) team anymore. Could be 2-0. Seahawks need to learn how to beat their division foes again if they want to win the NFC West.
49ers 17, Rams 16
Frank Gore the feel good story. Loses his mom this week, and scores 2 TDs. Loss all but buries Rams in NFC West. Schedule was favorable first two weeks and they went 0-2.
Huge win for the Skins, that opens up the NFC East for anyone (minus the G-men). McNabb is clearly rusty after missing most of last season and this pre-season. To his defense though, the Skins and Pack have much improved defenses. Anyone else surprised Joe Gibbs is still coaching?
Performance of the Week:
Brett Favre; Wins his 149th career game, breaking John Elway's record. Thanks to the Giants' defense, Favre looked like vintage 1990s Favre, and not present day interception happy Favre. That record will fall next week against San Diego.
Tie: Cincy defense & Norv Turner; Cincy's defense continues to be really, really bad if they don't get bailed out with turnovers. They easily would have lost to Baltimore if they hadn't coughed it up 6 times (Ravens still had chance to tie). 51 points to Cleveland? Good lord, we'll see if the Browns match that total the rest of the season! Good over/under for Vegas.
As far as Turner, the Chargers have played very poorly in their first two games. They could have lost to the Bears if a poor punt didn't turn out lucky by hitting a Bears' blocker in the leg. They'll win the west and get somewhere in the playoffs, but this team is suppose to win a Super Bowl with talent superseding NE and Indy, but they won't beat either. Will be confused by that hiring for years to come. Heck, he was the Raiders' coach 2 years ago. How'd that turn out? Some where Marty Schottenheimer is smiling.
I was tempted to go with Justin McCareins... that bum!
Doesn't it kind of feel like the mid-90s? Cowboys, Packers, and 49ers all 2-0, and O.J. Simpson is back in jail.

FH in 1st as "Dragon Sword Battle" Looms
Oswego State field hockey (1-5, 1-0) is unbeaten in SUNYAC play following Saturday's 2-0 victory over Morrisville (0-4, 0-1). The Lakers will battle nationally-ranked Cortland (5-1, 0-0) Wednesday as they try to ruin the Red Dragons' conference opener. This year's meeting marks the 8th annual "Dragon Sword Battle." A three-foot long samurai sword was donated in 2000 by Oswego State alumni as a prize for the winner of the Cortland-Oswego State game. The Dragons won the inaugural battle that year and have yet to relinquish the prize.
Cortland lost their 2007 season-opener at nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins 4-2 before defeating Rhodes, Rochester, Houghton and Hartwick by combined scores of 19-1. Despite losing to Johns Hopkins (#12) to start the season, the NFHCA member coaches still have Cortland (#6) ranked ahead of the undefeated Blue Jays. The Red Dragons defeated Hamilton 3-1 on Saturday, a team which the Lakers lost to by a score of 10-2 last Wednesday.

Oden Injured by Standing Up, Fan Suggests Reiki
Hey Greg,
Not sure if you are familiar with Reiki but it is a Japanese relaxation technique the promotes healing. Sometimes it has dramatic results. I have been attuned to perform Reiki but there are also master Reiki practicioners in portland like my Teacher. I plan on working with my teacher to send you Reiki and would be more then willing to give you a treatment if you wanted one. I urge you to do visualizations of your knee being healed and whole on a daily basis. This will help your body to promote it's healing process.
Fantastic, sound advice. I can't see why the ownership wants that team out of Portland.

J-Mac Immortalized
Distracted by my summer-long participation in a game called "Drink The Beer," I completely forgot to run this story:The Rochester Red Wings had J-Mac Bobble Head Night at Frontier Field on July 26, 2006. That's right, for just the price of admission to a AAA baseball game you could of had your very own highly-functioning autistic paperweight. But it didn't end there. Some fans are still auctioning off their souvenir from that night. Apparently, J-Mac bobble heads are still going for a few hundred bucks on eBay. McElwain also threw out the first pitch that night, which was clocked at 137 MPH.

Injuries Plague Giants in Opener
The injury bug bit the Giants hard as Osi Umenyiora, Brandon Jacobs, Eli Manning and Sean Dockery were all knocked out of the contest. A team doctor was be seen checking on Manning's right shoulder during the fourth quarter. Manning played through the pain and threw a touchdown to Burress before being slammed to the ground furing an unsuccessful two-point conversion attempt. Jared Lorenzen replaced Manning on the next drive and finished out the game.
Jacobs took a hit that caused his right knee to bend awkwardly early in the game. He sat the entire second half with official word of the injury to come later.
Umenyiora also left with a knee injury. His injury was officially listed as a sprain with more tests pending.

Several Fall Programs Still Winless
Oswego State men's and women's soccer, field hockey and golf are still 0-for-autumn. Thankfully, volleyball and women's tennis are picking up some of the slack.
The tennis squad downed Wells College 8-1 in their season opener, while volleyball (2-3) beat for their second straight victory. The Lakers lost two of the first three sets, but won the final two sets by scores of 30-26 and 15-13 for the comeback victory. Heidi Armstrong led Oswego State with 20 kills and 19 digs. Amanda McManus recorded 33 assists.
Women's soccer suffered a devastating defeat at the hands of St. John Fisher Saturday. The Lakers led for 55 minutes of the double-overtime contest. Tricia Sullivan put the Lakers on the board in the 26th minute on a rebound after Ashley Pople's direct kick struck the crossbar. Oswego State missed several opportunities to expand their lead in the second half before Fisher's Mary Dougherty lofted a shot over the head of Laker goalkeeper Toby Klein from 30 yards out.
Fisher then took the win in the 101st minute on a Kelly Zeppetella goal.

Turned out to be a pretty nice little Saturday
What a day in the world of sports!
- A moving ceremony before the first Virginia Tech home football game since the killing of 32 people on campus in April.
- Defending champion, Maria Sharapova upset at the U.S. Open.
- D-IAA National Champion Appalachian State defeats the Michigan Wolverines at the Big House!
- Finally, Red Sox rookie Clay Buchholz tosses a no-hitter in his 2nd big league start!
What a day, and it gets better! Only one week til NFL season!
