FREDONIA – The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced its 2008-09 Ice Hockey Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year awards.

Oswego freshman forward Eric Selleck (Shanley, Ont.) was named the 2008-09 SUNYAC Rookie of the Year. In conference play, he scored nine goals and ten assists, as the Lakers (17-7-1, 11-4-1) worked their way to the No. 2 seed in the SUNYAC Playoffs. Twice this year Selleck earned SUNYAC Rookie of the Week honors (Feb. 2 and Nov. 24).

The 2008-09 Herb Hammond Most Valuable Player of the Year was Plattsburgh sophomore goaltender Bryan Hince (Tillonsburg, Ont.). Herb Hammond was a coach for 12 years at Oswego and two additional years at Plattsburgh. He was named National Coach of the Year in 1981 while coaching at Plattsburgh. He has since spent 17 years as an NHL scout for several teams. Hince finished the season at 13-0-1 during SUNYAC play, recorded three shutouts, and had a .937 save percentage. Plattsburgh has been ranked first in the country in Division III for twelve straight weeks, and earned the number one seed in the Conference tournament. Potters' Pantaloons

GenEASYo NY- After all the smoke cleared and all the dust settled, and sticks, helmets and other hockey parifenalia was strewend across the Ice. The Oswego Laker's had won yet another game. Thier hot goaltender Tim Potter, had won yet another game, and Oswego continued to believe in Harry- err... Tim Potter magic!

However, there was one question that had yet to be asked. One hard hitting, journalistic avenue that had yet to be explored. The great minds at WTOP, and WNYO, who leave no stone unturned, and no road unexplored, had let this small inquiry pass them by. It was up to this rusty old hockey correspondent to ask the hard hitting question. As I stood microphone in hand, question at the ready. I stared the confident, almost cool as a cucumber goalie right in the mask after the game, and asked him point blank:

"Tim, what's the deal with your pants? Why are they so big?"

The silence that was to come was deafening. Alex Rodriguez wouldn't face a more invasive question in any press confrence to come. Tim, seemed to think for a moment, looked at me and gave his answer.

"It cuts down on angles, and makes me wider. You never know when that extra inch or two will help out. I get any advantage I can."

Ahhh, nicely played Mr. Potter. You must have been prepared. Your handlers had you ready. So for those that too, looked at our new hot topic between the pipes and wondered, "how could the Blue Line Club not afford proper attire for our starting goalie." Be advised, there is a method to our Mr. Potter's madness. Hopefully that extra inch can stop anything the Plattsburgh Cardinals are going to fire at him.

Former Buffalo State Hockey Player Dies in Plane Crash

A former Buffalo State women's hockey player was a passenger on a Continental Airlines flight that crashed Thursday night near Buffalo, killing 50 people.

From Buffalo Business First:

Among the crash victims is Maddy Loftus (pictured), a Parsippany, N.J. resident who attended Buffalo State College from 2002 to 2004, said Jeff Ventura, sports information director at the college. Loftus was supposed to play in Saturday’s women’s ice hockey reunion game, Ventura said.

Loftus transferred to Saint Mary’s University in Minnesota after completing her freshman and sophomore years at Buffalo State, he said. She was among 14 women, many of whom are local, lined up to play in Saturday’s game.

The flight had departed from Newark, N.J. and was on its final approach when it crashed into a house in Clarence.
