Men's Hockey Trounces Cortland in Conference Opener

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman forward Eric Selleck and senior forward Matt Whitehead (Newmarket, ON/Newmarket Hurricanes) each recorded two goals and one assist as nationally sixth-ranked Oswego defeated Cortland, 6-1, in the SUNYAC opener for both teams.

Freshman defenseman Hank Van Boxmeer (Orange, CA/Salmon Arm Silverbacks) and senior Brendan McLaughlin (Brampton, ON/Brampton Capitals) each added a goal and an assist for the Lakers (2-1, 1-0 SUNYAC). Senior goalie Chris Hyk (Hamilton, ON/Georgetown Raiders) stopped 31 of 32 shots on goal for the victory.

Sophomore forward Jarrett Gold (East Setauket/NY Bobcats) scored the lone goal for Cortland (1-3, 0-1 SUNYAC), assisted by junior forward Patrick Palmisano (Ann Arbor, MI/Bay State Breakers) and sophomore forward Greg Haney (Marcellus/National Sports Academy). Freshman Mike Reilly (New York City/Bismarck Bobcats) started in goal and made 30 saves while allowing five goals over the first two periods. Sophomore Dan Jewell (Medford/National Sports Academy) recorded 15 saves and gave up just one goal in the third period.

Oswego took a 3-0 lead after the first period. McLaughlin scored off a rebound just 38 seconds into the game, followed by Selleck goals at the 9:51 and 16:04 marks, the latter on a power play. The Lakers extended their lead to 5-0 in the second period on two goals by Whitehead.

Cortland broke up the shutout bid on Gold’s tally 8:49 into the third period. Oswego completed the scoring when Van Boxmeer scored with 1:33 remaining.

The Lakers will return to the Campus Center Ice Arena on Saturday to face third-ranked Elmira College in a 7 p.m. matchup. The Soaring Eagles defeated Oswego in their first meeting two weeks ago, 3-2.

Collins & Budde Honored By SUNYAC

Oswego State freshman Kelly Collins (pictured) was named SUNYAC rookie of the year on Monday for the 2008 field hockey season. The forward from Fairport led the Lakers in every major offensive statistic in her first collegiate season. Collins was also named first-team all conference.

Laker sophomore Sara Budde was named to the second team. The midfielder accounted for one third of the team's defensive saves this year. Oswego State finished the season with a record of 4-12, their best record since 2005.

The Green Man

I know this is off topic, but being a fan of the hit show "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" I couldn't help but get a good laugh during Friday's game. One unknown individual came to the game dressed as "The Green Man", which has grown to fame due to comedian Charlie Day's antics on the show. Maybe we have something here. I know that we have been looking for a mascot for our school for sometime. Could our answer be "The Green Man"?

Little Shakeup Expected in USCHO Poll

Monday marks the release of the weekly USCHO.com national hockey polls, and this edition of the division III men's top ten should not look all that different than the last.

Plattsburgh (1-0-0) could steal some first-place votes from #1 St. Norbert after a convincing 6-3 win over #3 Elmira (2-1-0) on opening night at the newly-remodeled Stafford Arena Saturday. The defending National Champion Green Knights have yet to play a game; they will open their season tomorrow night at Lawrence College.

Oswego State (1-1-0) scored an easy 7-2 victory over Lebanon Valley on Friday. The #5 Lakers may sneak past #4 Norwich, as the Cadets do not open their season until Nov. 15. Oswego State will play host to Elmira this Saturday in a rematch of their season opener.

Hobart (1-1-0) will likely fall after splitting a weekend series with unranked Buffalo State (1-3-0). The #8 Statesmen were shutout 4-0 in Buffalo on Friday before earning a 5-3 victory at home on Saturday. Middlebury should slide up a abit after a 5-3 win over an improving Morrisville program. Adrian (1-0-1) could also make a move up from #10 after earning a tie and a win in Potsdam (0-1-1) last weekend, a team that had received some points in the opening poll.

UPDATE: Make that no shakeup expected in USCHO poll. The Oswegonian's Jared Crast has alerted us to the fact that USCHO will not release another poll until Nov. 10.

Men's Hockey: Lakers Demolish LV, Platty Crushes Elmira

OSWEGO STATE 7, LEBANON VALLEY 2
The Oswego State men's ice hockey team defeated Lebanon Valley 7-2 Friday night in the Lakers' regular season home opener at the Campus Center Ice Arena. The newly-formed line of Ryan Ellis (2-1-3), Brendan McLaughlin (1-2-3) and Matt Whitehead (1-0-1) accounted for seven points as three of the four Laker lines produced at least one goal.

Oswego State freshman Paul Beckwith stopped 14 of 16 shots to earn his first collegiate victory in his first start in net. Senior forward Mark Lozzi tallied the game winning goal for the Lakers (1-1-0) in the game's 12th minute, he was set up by classmates Derrell Levy and Garren Reisweber.

The Laker power play converted on two of their first four chances, but went 0-for-6 from that point on to finish at 20%. The Oswego State penalty kill units killed off eight of Lebanon Valley's (0-1-0) nine power play chances.

SUNYAC play kicks off this Friday at 7 p.m. when the Lakers pay a visit to Cortland. The game will be broadcast on 88.9 FM WNYO, coverage starts at 6:30.

PLATTSBURGH 6, ELMIRA 3
Meanwhile, defending SUNYAC champion #2 Plattsburgh (1-0-0) earned a 6-3 victory in their season-opening Frozen Four rematch with #3 Elmira (2-1-0) Saturday night in Plattsburgh.

Cardinal forward Eric Satim beat Elmira goaltender Casey Tuttle twelve seconds into the contest and Plattsburgh never looked back. Dylan Clarke and Dan Sliasis added markers in the first and second period respectively to push the Plattsburgh lead to 3-0. The Soaring Eagles cut the lead to two with a Rich Schrank goal at 25:34, but that was the closest they would get.

Brian Hince stopped 20 shots in net to earn the victory for the Cardinals. Elmira was without forward Dave McKenna; he was ineligible due to a game disqualification he recieved for fighting Oswergo State's Francois Gagnon in last Saturday's game. Gagnon was also ineligible to the Lakers for the Lebnon Valley game.

Fall Updates From Laker Land

WOMEN'S TENNIS
First and foremost, we should mention that Tiarra Garrow advanced to the finals of the SUNYAC championship for first singles on Oct. 12 before falling to defending champion Dana Lim of New Paltz. Garrow finished the season with a singles record of 10-2 and made All-SUNYAC second team honors. She will soon be profiled on Greene's Game Night.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
The Lakers are winless in nine straight since "F###in' A Right"-gate, when the school paper appeared to get a little too excited about the team's winning streak. They have been shut out in five of their last six contests. Their record now stands at 5-10-1 overall, 1-8-1 in conference.

MEN'S SOCCER
Fourth-year coach Bob Friske has led Oswego State to their best conference record in eight years. After shutout wins over Fredonia and Buffalo State, the Lakers dropped three straight in conference before righting the ship with a 1-0 victory over New Paltz Saturday. Oswego State finishes the regular season conference schedule with 18 points, good for sixth place and a spot in the SUNYAC tournament. The Lakers (8-8-0, 6-4-0) will begin post-season play with a trip to third-seed Brockport on Election Day (Tuesday, Nov. 4) after they complete the regular season with at Union on Saturday.

FIELD HOCKEY
The Oswego State field hockey team scored a decisive 6-0 victory over Wells College in their final home game of the season Wednesday afternoon at Laker Field. Freshman Katie Mazuchowski tallied three goals, including the game winner in the game’s 14th minute. Sophomore Sara Budde found the back of the net twice and assisted on one of Mazuchowski’s markers.

Freshman Kelsey Moran earned her first collegiate points when she scored Oswego State’s second goal in the 23rd minute. The Lakers took a 2-0 lead into halftime before unloading a barrage of goals in the second. Sophomore Jamie Scharfe stopped nine shots in goal and combined with freshman Erica Lemke to earn the Lakers their first shutout win since Sept. 15, 2007. Wells College fell to 3-10 with the loss, they have dropped 10 staright games after starting the season 3-0. The Lakers imropoved to 4-11 heading into their final game Saturday at Ithaca College.

UPDATE: Ithaca beat Oswego State 2-1 in the season finale. The Lakers finished the season with a 4-12 mark.

Women's Ice Hockey Ties Nepean

The Oswego State women's ice hockey team played the Nepean Wildcats to a 4-4 tie in a Saturday afternoon exhibition game at the Campus Center Ice Arena. Sophomore Emily Grippin led the Lakers' production with a goal and an assist. Freshman goaltender Megan Amlinger led Laker goalies in saves with 17; she played the second period as coach Diane Dillon got a look at all three of her netminders. Junior Erin Robson got the start between the pipes for Oswego State and sophomore Emi Williams played the third period and overtime.

Laker freshman Jillian Bergeron wasted little time showing her scoring touch. The former Wildcat forward lit the lamp in the game's fifth minute to give Oswego State the game's first goal. Nepean answered less than a minute later on a marker by Jessica Kehoe. Oswego State would take a one-goal lead on four occasions throughout the night, never holding the edge for longer than 6:33 before the Wildcats evened the score.

Nepean put three shots on net in the extra frame, but Williams stopped all of them to lead Oswego State to a tie against a Wildcat team that beat the Lakers 5-3 last season.

Men's Hockey Ranked 6th in First USCHO Poll

The Oswego State Lakers are ranked sixth in the first USCHO men's division III national poll of the 2008-09 season. Elmira (2-0-0) is ranked third after their opening weekend victories over Morrisville (0-1-1) and the Lakers (0-1-0), although it is unclear if those victories were taken into account of the voting, as last year's record is listed for all teams.

Defending national champion St. Norbert tops the poll, they garnered 14 of a possible 20 first place votes. Plattsburgh, last year's SUNYAC champion and national runner up, is second and took in five votes for first. Adrian was also given a first place vote and round out the top ten; the Bulldogs won 26 of 29 games last year in their first season of college hockey.

The Potsdam Bears showed up on seven voters' polls after a solid season under first year coach Aaron Saul in 2007-08. The Bears finished 10-13-4, a five-win improvement from the season before, and made the semifinals of the SUNAYC postseason tournament.

Men's Ice Hockey: Soaring Eagles Soar to Victory

The season opener for the Lakers got off to a good start at the Murray Athletic Center. Freshman Erek Selleck deposited a backhand shot past Elmira's Casey Tuttle to knot the game up at 1-1. Then with 1:36 remaining in the first period Ryan Ellis took off on a breakaway, briefly losing control of the puck, and beat Tuttle glove side to give the Lakers the late lead.

Then the fireworks ensued with 19 seconds left after Brock Sawyer leveled Lakers forward Garren Reisweber into the boards. Fellow senior Derrell Levy immediately went to Reisweber's aide and got into a scuffle with a couple of Soaring Eagle players. After the players were separated, Levy was given a 2 minute penalty for roughing, while Sawyer was hit with a game misconduct.

The second period was a totally different game and from there on. The Lakers were sloppy in both zones of play and committed too many penalties. This disrupted any kind of offensive flow for the Lakers, which put them on the defense for most of the game. At 6:31 in the second Darcy Valliancourt tied the game on a powerplay. Then Karl Linden followed his first period goal with the game winner midway through the second period giving the Eagles a 3-2 win.

The Soaring Eagles were 3-for-8 on the powerplay while the Lakers went 0-for-4. This mirrors the same problems as the Lakers had last year, and if they are not corrected we could be seeing the same results. The Lakers will look to turn their slow start around against Lebanon Valley College next Friday at the Campus Center. But, they will be missing an important piece of the defense. Francois Gagnon will have to sit out due to his part in a late second period fight.

Cozze Captures Rite Aid 200 Crown

Frank Cozze has been coming to the New York State Fairgrounds landmark oval for 40 years. Sunday afternoon proved to be more than a happy ending as he captured the biggest DIRTcar Modified victory of his career in the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series Rite Aid 200 to close out the 37th edition of Super DIRT Week on the storied Syracuse Mile.

“I don’t even know what to say, I’m kind of choked up,” Cozze said while in victory lane. Now at the age of 53, the seasoned veteran from Wind Gap, Pennsylvania becomes the oldest driver to win DIRTcar NorthEast’s premier event for Big-Block Modifieds with the $50,000 top prize going toward an early retirement fund. “Everybody did such a great job … my brother spotting in the stands … all my sponsors … just so many people I don’t know who to thank first.”

Joining Cozze on center stage this Columbus Day Weekend were second-generation chauffeur Matt Sheppard and fellow Pennsylvania pilot Duane Howard, while a late-race charge afforded Canadian standout Stewart Friesen fourth-place just ahead of pole-winner and 2004 Rite Aid winner Tim Fuller.

“Nobody, I mean nobody, gets the gas mileage we got all week,” declared Cozze, who would ultimately circle the Syracuse Mile the last 129 laps on one tank of gas, with a handful of his closest challengers running dry as the final laps clicked off. Cozze went in for his pitstop on lap 71. Special thanks to Tom Skibinski, who his the PR Coordinator for DIRT Motorsports NE for the help with this article.

LIVE BLOGGING: Men's Hockey Green & White Game - Trades

Brad Dormiedy, Corey Callen, Derrell Levy, Andrew Mather, and Jordan Krusch are now playing for the green team while Mark Lozzi, Owen Kelly, and Matt Whitehead are now in white. Still 2-1 in favor of Beckwith's green team with 19:13 to play in the second half (only two periods today).

Chris Hyk just absolutely snuffed Corey Callen on a clean breakway. The freshman faked the wrister then tried to tuck the backhand in stick side. Hyk sprawled to the ice and stoned him.

LIVE BLOGGING: Green & White Game - Penalties Galore

There have been at least six infractions called in the first 18:18 of play, and both goals thus far have come off the power play.

Make that three power play goals. Derrell Levy went to the box for a hook and Erick Selleck blasted one past Hyk from between the circles, he was set up by Peter Magagna. Green now leads 2-1. Prior to that, Matt Whitehead had corraled his own rebound off of Hyk only to blow the follow-up shot at an empty net.

Field Hockey Closes SUNYAC Play With 8-4 Loss

Brockport netted four goals in the final 12:49 of the second half en route to an 8-4 victory over Oswego State Thursday afternoon at Laker Field. Senior midfielder Amanda Pickard (pictured) found the back of the net on three occasions for the Golden Eagles (7-6, 3-2). The 2007 SUNYAC MVP and three-time first-teamer pushed her conference-leading totals in points to 20 (29 overall) and goals to nine (13 overall) with one game yet to play.

Sophomore Kelly Henry scored the game-winner in the 45th minute, she finished with a game-high four goals which more than doubled her season total (7).

The Lakers finished conference play with a conference record of 2-4 (3-9), winning multiple conference games in one season for the first time since 2002. They are on pace to have their best finish since 2005 despite the fact that second-leading scorer Brittany Roetzer (3 goals, 3 assists) has been out of action since Sept. 13 with an injury. Junior co-captain Kim Hiffa has also missed the past two games with injury; Emily Greene and Nichole Carlozzi each missed today's contest and were listed as injured.

The banged-up Lakers managed to make due with what they had for the better part of the game, leading 2-1 towards the end of the first half and were within a goal midway through the second. Freshman Kelly Collins scored twice for Oswego State to finish her first SUNYAC season with 17 points (22 overall) and seven goals (8 overall). Sophomore Sara Budde helped keep the Lakers in the game with some stellar defensive work to help goalkeeper Jamie Scharfe protect the net.

Oswego State returns to action Oct. 14 when they visit Houghton at 4 p.m. They will be looking to avenge a Sept. 3 season-opening 6-2 loss at Laker Field.

Newman Night Just Tip Of The Iceberg For Crunch Promotions

The Syracuse Crunch, fresh off of their second annual pre-season game in Oswego, have announced that they will hang the number seven jersey of Reg Dunlop from the OnCenter rafters Saturday Night. The announcement comes just a few weeks after the passing of actor Paul Newman, the man who portrayed the player/coach of the Charlestown Chiefs in the 1977 film "Slap Shot". The OnCenter Onondaga County War Memorial in Syracuse serves as home to the Crunch and also housed several scenes of "Slap Shot."

The Crunch have invited Joanne Woodward, Newman's widow, to Saturday night's game against Rochester where the team will raise the jersey. She has yet to accept nor deny the invitation. The game will serve as the home opener of Syracuse's 15th season at the OnCenter rink. The Crunch, never ones to shy away from public relation opportunities (think Britney Spears Night and Gordie Howe), plan to roll out a full arsenal of special events.

"Fifteen's gonna be a big theme for us this year," said Crunch Senior VP Jim Sarosy. "We're gonna roll out a big 15th anniversary team contest that we're gonna do with fan voting. We have a star from High School Musical coming in on opening night (Saturday), Ryne Sanborn, which we're absolutely thrilled to be having here. The third game of the season we're gonna be doing a banner for Carmine Basilio, a big time boxer in this area."

The Crunch open the 2008-09 regular season on the road tomorrow night in Rochester.
