Fall Updates From Laker Land


WOMEN'S TENNIS
First and foremost, we should mention that Tiarra Garrow advanced to the finals of the SUNYAC championship for first singles on Oct. 12 before falling to defending champion Dana Lim of New Paltz. Garrow finished the season with a singles record of 10-2 and made All-SUNYAC second team honors. She will soon be profiled on Greene's Game Night.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
The Lakers are winless in nine straight since "F###in' A Right"-gate, when the school paper appeared to get a little too excited about the team's winning streak. They have been shut out in five of their last six contests. Their record now stands at 5-10-1 overall, 1-8-1 in conference.

MEN'S SOCCER
Fourth-year coach Bob Friske has led Oswego State to their best conference record in eight years. After shutout wins over Fredonia and Buffalo State, the Lakers dropped three straight in conference before righting the ship with a 1-0 victory over New Paltz Saturday. Oswego State finishes the regular season conference schedule with 18 points, good for sixth place and a spot in the SUNYAC tournament. The Lakers (8-8-0, 6-4-0) will begin post-season play with a trip to third-seed Brockport on Election Day (Tuesday, Nov. 4) after they complete the regular season with at Union on Saturday.

FIELD HOCKEY
The Oswego State field hockey team scored a decisive 6-0 victory over Wells College in their final home game of the season Wednesday afternoon at Laker Field. Freshman Katie Mazuchowski tallied three goals, including the game winner in the game’s 14th minute. Sophomore Sara Budde found the back of the net twice and assisted on one of Mazuchowski’s markers.

Freshman Kelsey Moran earned her first collegiate points when she scored Oswego State’s second goal in the 23rd minute. The Lakers took a 2-0 lead into halftime before unloading a barrage of goals in the second. Sophomore Jamie Scharfe stopped nine shots in goal and combined with freshman Erica Lemke to earn the Lakers their first shutout win since Sept. 15, 2007. Wells College fell to 3-10 with the loss, they have dropped 10 staright games after starting the season 3-0. The Lakers imropoved to 4-11 heading into their final game Saturday at Ithaca College.

UPDATE: Ithaca beat Oswego State 2-1 in the season finale. The Lakers finished the season with a 4-12 mark.
