Return to Sender: SU's Jones Is Nation's Leading Kick Returner

The Syracuse Orange could not have scripted a more anti-climactic start to Doug Marrone's first game as head coach.

The Orange had elected to open the Marrone era on offense, but Jim McKenzie's first snap of the season flew over the head of quarterback Greg Paulus and was recovered by Minnesota at the 16 yard line. Ten seconds later the Golden Gophers had a 7-0 lead.

With a near-capacity crowd sitting silenced and befuddled, Syracuse had handed Minnesota momentum in the most cruhing of fashions.

That is, until a redshirt freshman went and ripped it back with a 79-yard kickoff return that brought the Orange faithful to their feet. The offense could only muster a field goal, but the home field advantage had come back into the equation as the fans had something to scream about.

Mike Jones already had enough going against him when he injured his knee during spring ball in March. He had just spent his freshman year redshirting, only able to show his talents behind closed doors at practices for coaches who were no longer employed at Syracuse University. The media and fans were abuzz over the abundance of talent at Jones' position, running back, yet Jones' name often came last, if at all, in the debate over who would head up the depth chart come September.

The cherry on top came in the form of that knee injury that required surgery, sidelining Jones until early August. He joined the team for fall practice with little more than a month remaining until the season opener. He took little more than a week to carve out his niche on the roster.

From Syracuse.com's Orange Football Blog, Aug. 11:

Redshirt freshman Mike Jones didn't practice in the spring because of a leg injury. Marrone said Jones has caught his eye particularly as a kick returner.

Jones continued to impress in the weeks leading up to the season opener. Marrone continued to laud him.

From Syracuse.com's Orange Football Blog, Aug. 24:

Marrone sounded like he was about to burst into the Happy Happy Joy Joy song over the four players he has at running back - Delone Carter, Antwon Bailey, Averin Collier and Mike Jones. Marrone mentioned that Bailey has an unspecified injury, but is coming around. And while he's constistently been pumped about Carter, the player he mentioned tonight that is raising his eyebrows - and his stock - is Jones, the redshirt freshman from Harrisburg, Pa.

"I could play any one of those guys," Marrone said. "I really could. I'm happy with them. There will be a position for them. Obviously, the one that is playing the best is Delone Carter. Antwon Bailey is playing well. He has a little nagging injury but he'll be fine. He'll be playing tomorrow. Averin Collier is starting to come along well. He's coming away from some nagging injuries. But Michael Jones has been a surprise for me. I mean, I'll be honest with you."

By that time, Jones had already secured the spot as the team's returner on kickoffs. He made an immediate impact in front of 48, 617 Carrier Dome patrons on Sept. 5 in the season opener against Minnesota.

Jones' efforts resulted in the Orange having an average starting position of their own 38 yard line following a Gopher score. With an offense that was still adjusting to a new quarterback and a new scheme, the added yardage helped Syracuse muster enough points to force overtime before falling 23-20.

Not even mighty Penn State could contain the Middletown, PA native the following week when he found seams for returns of 38 and 39, both following Penn State touchdowns. The Orange lost 28-7, but the offense was again provided a cushion with an average start position of their own 31 yard line following Nittany Lion kickoffs.

Northwestern became the third Big Ten team to struggle against the Orange kick return unit when Jones gave Syracuse an average start position of the 32. Marrone also decided to give the 5-11 freshman some touches on offense, and Jones responded with first down runs of 11 and 14 yards to go along with a 14-yard reception.

The Maine Black Bears went with a different approach in week four when they visited the Salt Cirty, keeping the ball away from Jones. Head Coach Jack Cosgrove called for two onside kicks (both succesful) and another kickoff sailed out of bounds. Jones did manage to get his hands on two kickoffs, averaging 19 yards per return. He was also trotted out for a punt return and gained 14 yards on a short punt by Michael Brusko to give the Orange first and ten at the Maine 31. He also ran the ball once for five yards, giving him 30 yards rushing for the short season on just three carries.

While Jones' role in the offense remains limited, he continues to shine every time the ball touches his hands. And while he has yet to break "the big one," his consistancy on Bob Casullo's special teams unit has landed his name at the head of the nation in kick return yards. On 18 tries, Jones has racked up 464 yards, an average of 25.8 yards per return. His total yardage figure ranks first in the nation and his average is in the top 15 for returners with 10 or more attempts. Pretty good, but not yet tremendous as Jones is still in search of pay dirt.

Yankees Clinch Division, Home Field

The New York Yankees clinched their eighth AL East title of the decade today with a 4-2 win over Boston at Yankee Stadium. Veteran outfielder Hideki Matsui singled in his 89th and 90th RBI of the season with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to give the Yankees their first and last lead of the afternoon.

Captain Derek Jeter produced his 64th multi-hit game of the season and started a 6-4-3 double play with the bases loaded and nobody out it the third inning. Jeter has committed just eight errors at shortstop this year, one fewer than his career low of nine committed in 1998.

The win marked the 100th of the season for New York, the first time they reached the triple-digit mark since 2004 when they blew a 3-0 series lead to the Red Sox in the ALCS. The victory also gave the Yankees a choice. As the best team in the league that won the All-Star Game, they now have a choice of having two days off in the ALDS or three days off. The extra day of rest would come in between games one and two of the series. The Yankees have until 24 hours after discovering who their opponent is to make that decision.

"I think you want to physically see how you are at the end of the year," manager Joe Girardi said. "The thing is, with the longer series ... You can use your bullpen pretty much every day -- every guy, every day. Our bullpen has been a strength of ours, and that's something we're definitely going to consider."

As the best team in the league, the Yankees will play the playoff team with the worst record in the American League in the ALDS provided that team is not in their division. If the season were to end today, Detroit would be headed to the Bronx for the start of a best-of-five series. The Tigers' magic number to clinch the division over Minnesota is six. The Twins travel to Detroit tonight to begin a four-game set with the Tigers tomorrow.

Today's Magic Number: Roger Maris

Former Deadspin editor Will Leitch has come up with an admirable way to pay tribute to the former players of his favorite franchise while avoiding a jinx on their chance at a division crown. The St. Louis Cardinals hold a 9.5 game lead over the Cubs in the NL Central. With 18 games remaining in the season, that puts their magic number at 11. Rather than stating his team's daily number, Leitch substitutes the name of a former Cards player who wore that day's magic number on his uniform. I am stealing this idea.

Five facts about Roger Maris:
  1. His record-breaking 1961 season, in which he hit 61 home runs, is the only season of his career in which he led the league in the category.
  2. Maris did not draw a single intentional walk in the year that he hit 61 home runs. Mickey Mantle batted behind him in the lineup for most of the year.
  3. His last name was Maras at birth, but he changed it to Maris while playing minor league baseball after fans began rhyming Maras with unflattering words.
  4. Maris was a talented three-sport athlete at Fargo High School. His success on the football field prompted Oklahoma Sooners coach Bud Wilkinson to offer Maris a scholarship. Maris initially accepted, but when no one greeted him after he arrived to campus via bus he turned around and went home to North Dakota.
  5. Though the Yankees retired the #9 in honor of Maris, he is not the last player to wear it. Dick Simpson, Ron Woods, and Graig Nettles all wore the number before it was retired in 1984.
9: Roger Maris
8: Yogi Berra
7: Mickey Mantle
6: Steve Sax
5: Joe DiMaggio
4: Lou Gehrig
3: Babe Ruth

Today's Magic Number: Phil "Scooter" Rizzuto

Former Deadspin editor Will Leitch has come up with an admirable way to pay tribute to the former players of his favorite franchise while avoiding a jinx on their chance at a division crown. The St. Louis Cardinals hold a 9.5 game lead over the Cubs in the NL Central. With 18 games remaining in the season, that puts their magic number at 11. Rather than stating his team's daily number, Leitch substitutes the name of a former Cards player who wore that day's magic number on his uniform. I am stealing this idea.

Five facts about Phil Rizzuto:
  1. Rizzuto played 13 seasons, all with the Yankees, and won seven world titles. He never signed with another team following the 1956 season when New York released him. He had offers from the Cardinals and Dodgers.
  2. Rizzuto first became eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1961, but was not elected in until 33 years later. The veterans committee voted him into Cooperstown in 1994.
  3. During his broadcast days, Rizzuto would often mark his scorecards with "WW" which stood for "wasn't watching." He was the radio and television voice of the Yankees for 40 years, retiring in 1996. He called the first career home run on current Yankees short stop Derek Jeter that year.
  4. He owns a gold record for Meat Loaf's "Paradise By The Dashboard Light." Rizzuto lent his voice to the part of the song where a baseball announcer is heard calling play-by-play for a game. This is actually meant to represent Meat Loaf's attempts to lose his virginity.
  5. Rizzuto first tried to break into MLB with the Brookyn Dodgers in 1935 as an 18-year-old, but was told by then-manager Casey Stengal to "go get a shoeshine box," which led to this:

10: Phil Rizzuto
9: Roger Maris
8: Yogi Berra
7: Mickey Mantle
6: Steve Sax
5: Joe DiMaggio
4: Lou Gehrig
3: Babe Ruth
2: Mike Gallego

NCAA President Myles Brand Dead Of Cancer At 67

NCAA President Dr. Myles Brand died Wednesday after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 67 years old.

Brand will perhaps be best remembered for his tenure as the 16th president at Indiana University. He made headlines on Sept. 10, 2000 when he fired the school's iconic basketball coach, Bobby Knight, following several reports of bullish behavior. Fans, students, and alumni met the announcement with an aggressive protest that forced Brand from his home that night. Others praised Brand for holding Indiana University's standards in higher regard than its athletics.

In 2002, Brand left Indiana to become president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, a position he held until his death. Brand fought to make academics the primary focus of every student-athlete. "Intercollegiate athletics can be a vital force in America's culture, exemplifying the positive spirit and values of our way of life," said Brand in a speech to the National Press Club. "[But] academics must come first."

On My Way To See History (I Hope)

I'm about 90 minutes outside of NYC, lumbering down Route 17 to see game one of a day-night double header between the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees. Clipper Captain Derek Peter enters the twin bill with 2,718 career hits, three shy of the franchise record held by Lou Gehrig. I'll provide live updates throughout the day.

Live Blog: JD 3 Fowler 0

Midway through the 3rd quarter JD's Denis Petrovic banks a chip-shot FG in off the left upright to give the Red Rams a 3-0 lead. Fowler's first two drives of the half have ended with fumbles in their own territory.

Live Blog: JD-Fowler Scoreless at Half

No score after 24 minutes at the Dome. Fowler threatened on a drive late in the half, but J-D senior David Urcioli intercepted Fowler QB Kelvin Amparo at the Rams' 35 yard line.

J-D Opens '09 In The Dome

Another era begins in Syracuse University's Carrier Dome when longtime Jamesville-Dewitt assistant Eric Ormond debuts as head coach of the Red Rams. Lining up opposite the scarlet and white will be Class A American rival Fowler.  Neither team qualified for the Section III playoffs last season with only the winless Mexico Tigers saving both schools from the dubious distiction of "cellar-dwellar."  J-D won last year's regular season meeting 20-12.  Today's kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on Time Warner Sports 26 (Channel 813 HD).

We'll Look At The Tape

Greggers

I'd like to comment on the game but I'm going to look at the tape first. Also, I'm at work and we have Internet Explorer 0.1 - not conducive to blog authoring.

Mike Williams Would Like To Slide In Your Guts

Syracuse starting wide out Mike Williams has taken to his Facebook profile in recent days, and his status updates have been interesting to say the least.  The cover of last season's media guide Buffalo native is returning to the team this year a university-issued suspension cost him all of the 2008 season.  He tied a school single-season record as a sophomore with 60 catches.  He also owns an active streak of nine straight games with a touchdown grab, the longest such streak in the nation.  Orange fans have eagerly anticipated the return of Williams after a 2008 season in which no member of the Orange receiving corps eclipsed 30 catches.  Judging by his updates, he's equally as eager to get all up in our guts (click image to see full size):

Super Bowl Hero Tyree Expects Giants To Cut Him

David Tyree told the Daily News on Monday that he is treating Thursday's exhibition game against New England as his New York Giants swan song.  The former Syracuse Orange wide out made an indelible mark on the franchise's history a little more than a year ago when he made an improbable late-game catch in Super Bowl XLII.  New York went on to beat New England 17-14 to capture their first world title in 17 years.  Since then Tyree has not played in a regular season game.  He missed al of 2008 with a knee injury and has been limited this preseason by a hamstring injury.

Changes

Welcome to TheVOTL.com.  This is the blog formally known as WNYOsports.com, an online outlet I created in the summer of 2007 after I was elected sports director of SUY Oswego radio station 88.9 FM WNYO.  New WNYO sports director Matt Solomon has now created a new WNYO sports blog which can be found here.

Solly will also relieve me as the radio voice of Oswego State men's ice hockey.  I haven't spoken with Solly about his plans, but I imagine he will broadcast the entire season, home and away, the way I did the past two years (save for that Thanksgiving Wisconsin trip).  Solly produced the majority of the games I called during the 2008-09 season and is most deserving of the honor of calling games for the 2009-10 season.  Here's hoping he keeps it to five-or-less Mike Lange references per game.

As for this site, you will still be able to read up on Oswego State men's ice hockey as I plan to continue blogging about the program.  However, due to the fact that this site is no longer affiliated with WNYO, I no longer feel obligated to write about the sports that I hate (sorry, swimming & diving).  Since I have moved back to Syracuse, you can expect to see more "coverage" of the CNY sports scene.  I will be attending the start of the Doug Marrone era on Sept. 5 and plan to provide a first-hand account of Greg Paulus and the Syracuse Orange football squad owning the Gophers (I pray).  I'll also chronicle my adventures as a laid-off sports reporter (from Syracuse's 620 AM WHEN) trying to "re-start" my career in a struggling industry.

To those of you who have followed this blog for the past two years, I thank you.  Might I also add, don't go anywhere.  I hope to keep this site running for awhile.

Yours Truly,

Ryan Maloney
