Roetzer & Scalise Named All-SUNYAC

Two members of the Oswego State field hockey team were named to the All-SUNYAC teams, which were announced on Tuesday by the conference office.

Senior defender Kayla Scalise was named to the SUNYAC First Team. Scalise started all 16 games for the Lakers this season and was the anchor of Oswego State's defensive group. Scalise, a native of Clinton, also started all 17 games in her junior season.

Freshman forward Brittany Roetzer was named to the All-SUNYAC Second Team. Roetzer, a native of Akron, led Oswego State in scoring this season with five goals and an assist for 11 points. She scored all three Laker goals in a 3-1 win at Wells on Oct. 10.

The Oswego State field hockey team finished the 2007 season with a 2-14 record.

Girardi Gets the Nod

1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand is reporting that Joe Girardi will become the next manager of the New York Yankees. Girardi's agent confirmed the offer, but did not say if his client would accept.

The Yankees are expected to announce Girardi as the new skipper on Tuesday. His contract is reportedly worth $6 million over three years.

Candidates Don Mattingly and Tony Pena were reportedly told by GM Brian Cashman that they will not be named manager. ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reports that Mattingly will not accept a role on the Yankee staff. Mattingly had been considered the favorite to replace Joe Torre after Torre's resignation last week.

A-Rod Opts Out

Alex Rodriguez has opted out of his contract with the New York Yankees. The announcement came from super agent Scott Boras last night and was confirmed by Hank Steinbrenner.

"It's clear he didn't want to be a Yankee," Steinbrenner told the New York Daily News. "He doesn't understand the privilege of being a Yankee on a team where the owners are willing to pay $200 million to put a winning product on the field.

"I don't want anybody on my team that doesn't want to be a Yankee. It's goodbye."

Late goal gives Oswego State tie at Elmira

Laker junior forward Matt Whitehead scored with 1:22 remaining in the third period to tie the game and the Oswego State men's ice hockey team tied Elmira 4-4 on Saturday night at the Murray Athletic Center in Elmira. Elmira scored the first goal of the game 4:35 into the first period, but the Lakers scored the next three goals to build a two-goal lead.

Brendan McLaughlin
scored his first of the season on the power play, assisted by Ryan Ellis to tie the score. Laker sophomore Neil Musselwhite scored with one second remaining in the first period to give Oswego State a 2-1 lead after one period.

Francois Gagnon scored an unassisted goal for the Lakers seven minutes into the second period to give Oswego State a 3-1 lead, but the Soaring Eagles rallied. A power-play goal by Elmira's Rusty Masters reduced the lead to one goal and then Andrew Bedford scored the game-tying goal with 7:21 left in the second period.

Oswego State senior Joel Kitchen was whistled for a checking-from-behind major late in the second and the five-minute Elmira power play carried over into the third period. The Soaring Eagles capitalized 2:29 into the third period as Ryan Arnone scored.

Whitehead's late goal earned Oswego State the tie.

Laker goalie Ryan Scott made 22 saves and Elmira's Casey Tuttle had 17 saves.

The Lakers are now 0-1-1 on the season and Elmira is 1-0-1. Oswego State hosts arch-rival Plattsburgh on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Campus Center Ice Arena.

Keyshawn Interviews Ocho Cinco

This video is like watching Keyshawn interview Keyshawn or Chad interview Chad. They are essentially the same wide reciever. Big-ego, big-mouthed standout wide receivers who try to deflect criticism even though its dumped on their door steps. Personally, I love it when two big egos clash because its good entertainment for us humble folk, so sit back and enjoy.

One Game at a Time: Elmira

One Game at a Time previews every Laker men's hockey opponent

Part I: Elmira Soari
ng Eagles

Tonight, Oswego State officially kicks off the post-Ryan Woodward era against a revenge-minded Elmira club. The Soaring Eagles and Lakers engaged in 180 minutes of battle a season ago; Oswego State came away with three victories. Last year's home-and-home series served as a penalty clinic with a combined 45 infractions committed.

Both teams return their top five scorers and starting backstops from a year ago. Casey Tuttle took the full-time starter job from Raphael Cundari after a 2-6-1 start for the Soaring Eagles. Elmira won four of their next five after the switch. Tuttle's play in net helped his club to an DIII ECAC playoff birth.

The Eagles won their quarterfinal match-up with Hobart, but paid a steep price. Tuttle was injured in the second period and had to be replaced. The Eagles would win that game, but were no match for Manhattanville in the semifinals. Their season ended in much the same manor it had begun, Cundari in net and a loss. Tonight's game marks Tuttle's return to the ice.

Tonight also marks the collegiate debut of Rick Shrank. Coach Tim Ceglarski says Shrank could see time on the first line as early as tonight. That line also consists of Michael Richard, last year's team-leader in points (33) and assists (24). Joining him will be sophomore Rusty Masters. Masters was the Eagles' second-leading goal-scorer as a freshman with 12. Unlike Richard, Masters has never known the feeling of defeating Oswego State.

Ceglarski bolstered his defense by bringing in a pair of European blueliners. Karl Linden and Sebastian Gulden spent last season with the Bradford Rattlers of the GJMHL. Ceglarski says both are solid defenders, while Linden is also a threat at the other end of the ice.

Elmira is looking for their first victory over the green and gold since Oct. 28, 2005. That was a decisive 5-1 victory over the Lakers at the old Romney Field House. They're now 0-for-2 at the Campus Center, and have dropped the last four meetings. Oswego State goalie Ryan Scott is starting his senior season against the same team he started his Laker career. Scott held the Eagles to a pair of goals in a 2-2 tie on Oct. 30, 2004. He is 4-0-1 lifetime against Elmira.

Tune into 88.9 FM tonight beginning at 6:30 for all the live action. WTOP 10 will also broadcast the game on cable access channel 96 in Oswego County.

Jacoby Ellsbury Earns America Free Taco... Sorry Oswego

Jacoby Ellsbury's stolen base in the bottom of the 4th of Game 2 of the World Series won each American a free taco from Taco Bell. From 2pm-5pm on October 30th, you can walk into any participating Taco Bell and demand your free taco.

But wait! What about Oswego? It's going to be fun driving a half hour to the Great Northern Mall for your 77 cent taco, haha! I know I'll be hitting up the three branches that are within blocks of my workplace. Suckas! Maybe Subway will give away free pieces of pepperoni at some point.

Got a feeling I won't be welcome in Oswego upon my next visit. But hey, at least I'll have taco!

Pat Morgan

P.S. For those readers in Lawerence, KS, you may want to get to your local Taco Bell early.

"You don't tell me you aren't a f*in participating Taco Bell!"

(Thanks Maloney for mentioning this guy during your radio show)

Feature on the Lakers

Syracuse Post-Standard's Lindsay Kramer wrote about the Lakers in the Thursday edition.

Garren Reisweber's parents, Gary and Bethann, did not make the trip to the championship game. So they did the next best thing. Sort of.

They had a party at their home in Williamsville and tried capture the atmosphere on video. When Garren got back, he watched a replay of the bedlam.

"My mom didn't know how to work the DVD player. They had a video camera pointed at the TV. When we won, everyone went crazy. There were babies screaming. My dog knocked over the table the camera was on. The camera was aimed at the floor. I'm glad she did that (filmed the chaos). Normally you wouldn't get the noise of the people in the room."

Rudy, Say It Aint So!

Former NYC Mayor, Rudy Giuliani was seen in Boston Tuesday sporting a Boston Red Sox hat. Giuliani claims to be a diehard Yankees fan, and is seen at every huge game in his front row seats right next to the Yankees dugout. Yankees fans in NYC are in rage about this decision. Giuliani claims he is just rooting for the American League team. This isn't the Kansas City Royals! He must be over confident that he'll be backed in the Republican primaries in New York, and is going after the New England states. Remember the New Hampshire primary is the first major primary that Rudy will have to win come 2008. We'll see how effective Rudy's power play will be.

Marie Osmond, We Are Not Amused

This clip is from last night's live airing of Dancing With the Stars. Marie Osmond did her best Steve Moore impression as the judges broke down her performance. WNYO Sports finds this in poor taste. Ms. Osmond, we award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Side note: Don't the male dancers get a little too touchy-feely with their celebrity partners? Guys, you're not fooling your fathers. They're the ones who have spent the past 25 years not being able to look their buddies in the eye while talking about you.

Laettner Has Really Let Himself Go

At first glance I too thought this was a video clip of Christian Laettner toward the end of his less than impressive NBA career, but I guess he didn't go to town at Dunkin' Donuts like Shawn Kemp. Aminu Timberlake, the Kentucky freshman Laettner stomped on in the 1992 East Regional Final, should be happy Laettner didn't carry a load like that. (Yes, that was the same game as this video depicts when Laettner shot 10 for 10 from the field, including the famous game winner, to send the Dukies to the Final Four and their second National Championship. A Shameless mention of "The Shot" by a Duke fan here.)

However, upon further viewing this video was determined to actually be a classic Chris Farley ESPN college basketball commercial from the early 1990s. Apparently the ESPN marketing department resisted the temptation to include Dick Vitale in a commercial with Farley. I'm sure some interns would have been killed in the filming of that commercial. Farley is still greatly missed though, as funny fat guys have been hard to come by (excluding funny sausage) since his untimely death in 1997.

Renovations to Plattsburgh's Barn Coming

A look at the work to be done on the Ronald B. Stafford arena, image courtesy of Cardinal points online. I still think The Oswegonian is ahead of CP in terms of web coverage.

The Curse of Kenny Lofton? Whatcha Talkin Bout?

For the fifth time since 1999, Kenny Lofton has been on the losing end of five magicial series comebacks. It makes me believe he did something in a previous life to bring on such disappointment upon his teams and himself.

In 1999, Kenny and his Cleveland Indians had a 2-0 ALDS lead over the Boston Red Sox. The Sox would win three in a row with a great Game 5 performance from Pedro Martinez to shock the Tribe.

In 2002, Lofton was a member of the San Francisco Giants when they had a 3-2 series lead, and a 5-0 lead in Game 6 against the Angels. The Giants seemed destined to win their first championship since the team moved from NYC. The Angels came back in the bottom of the 7th and 8th to win, and then went on to win a ho-hum Game 7.

In 2003, Lofton was traded from the Pirates to the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs rolled through the first four games of the NLCS taking a 3-1 series lead. Steve Bartman influenced, the Cubs would blow the lead with their two best pitchers on the mound in Games 6 & 7. To this point, I thought the curse was over Dusty Baker's head who managed both the '02 Giants and '03 Cubs. Why couldn't he choke on one of those toothpicks he likes to chew on during games.

In 2004, Lofton would catch on with the New York Yankees, where he would be a member of the greatest collapse in post-season history. The Pinstripes became the first team to blow a 3-0 series lead. While he was only a part time OF/DH that series, his presence on the Yankees' bench was enough to cause the downfall. Finding out later how much Kenny hated Joe Torre, Torre would have been best putting him in a burlap sack and locking him in the clubhouse somewhere.

In 2007, Lofton was traded from the Rangers back to his home for many years in the Cleveland Indians. He had a great post-season helping the Tribe build a 3-1 ALCS lead. In Game 7, he would make the biggest mistake of the series. On a rope hit down the left field line, Lofton was unable to score from second with 1-out. The next batter bounced into a double play allowing the Red Sox to keep a one-run lead. The Red Sox would then go nuts rolling to the Game 7 victory. The five collapses started with one to the Red Sox and would end with one to the Red Sox.

Lofton has not only been a part of these five collapses, but six other postseason failures. Look at Kenny Lofton's post-season career. The bottom line here is this fiesty, Gary Coleman wannabe has some bad vibes resonating from his four foot frame. Forget about "Curse of the Billy Goat" or whatever other stupid curses are out there, the Curse of Kenny Lofton is far more powerful.

Dan & Ed Pie Eating Highlights

WNYO's Dan & Ed Pumpkin Pie Eating Contest Today @ 5

Come to Paul's Big M in Oswego (Corner of W 1st & Utica) to watch Dan & Ed host a WNYO Pumpkin Pie Eating Contest.

WNYO Sports Director Ryan Maloney is making his competitive-eating debut, WNYO will broadcast the event live on the air, and WTOP-10 will be there.

Don't miss it.

This is Getting Ridiculous

It is halftime in Miami. Tom Brady has two more touchdown tosses than incomplete passes (5, 3).

Randy Moss has two catches: a 35-yard TD and a 50-yard TD.

The 6-0 Pats lead the 0-6 'Fins 42-7.

Brady's 2007 line: 164-223, 2062 Yds, 26 TD

J.D. Boo? Paul Byrd Didn't Achieve a 4.59 ERA Naturally?

J.D. Drew cranked a first-inning grand-slam home run to center field to put the Boston Red Sox up for good in game 6. They held on to win 12-2, with Curt Schilling winning his second game of the series. The Cleveland Indians' two-game lead has now been erased as game 7 approaches.

As if the outcome of games 5 and 6 weren't bad enough for the Indians, they now have a performance-enhancing issue to deal with. Paul Byrd, of all people, has admitted to receiving HGH. He says it was prescribed by a doctor (so you know it's legit).

The writers at the San Francisco Chronicle were the ones to break this story. They've kind of got a thing for the baseball drug scene.

Tonight, game 3 starters Jake Westbrook and Daisuke Matsuzaka (which I spelled "Daisasuke Matsusaka" before spell-checking) will duel for post-season glory. Westbrook got the better of the Japanese rookie in Cleveland. He went 6 2/3 giving up two earned, while Dice-K didn't survive the fifth and gave up four. The Both bullpens pitched lights-out as the Indians went on to win 4-2.

The Colorado Rockies, winners in 21 of their last 22 games, await tonight's victor. They are 7-0 this post-season, but have not had this many off days since February. They clinched the NLCS from Arizona on Oct. 15. The World Series won't begin until Oct. 24.

Max McGee 1932-2007

Max McGee, the man who scored the first Super Bowl touchdown, died Saturday at the age of 75. The former Green Bay Packer fell from the roof of his Minneapolis home while trying to remove leaves.

The following is from the Pioneer Press:

Thrust into the Packers' starting lineup during 1967's Super Bowl I after Boyd Dowler suffered a shoulder injury, McGee - still hung over from a night of partying - caught seven passes for 138 yards and two TDs to lift Green Bay to a 35-10 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

ESPN.com shed more light on McGee's personality:

Though an admirer of (Vince) Lombardi, McGee time and again pushed the tough-as-nails coach to the breaking point.

McGee -- remembered for saying: "When it's third-and-10, you can take the milk drinkers and I'll take the whiskey drinkers every time." -- put Lombardi to the ultimate test prior to the first Super Bowl.

McGee had caught only four passes for 91 yards during the 1966 regular season and, not expecting to play against the Chiefs, violated the team's curfew and spent the night before the game partying.

Reportedly, the next morning he told Dowler: "I hope you don't get hurt. I'm not in very good shape."

Dowler went down with a separated shoulder on the Packers' second drive, and McGee had to borrow a helmet because he left his in the locker room. A few plays later, McGee made a one-handed reception of a pass from Bart Starr and ran 37 yards to score.

"He had a delightful sense of humor and had a knack for coming up with big plays when you least expected it to happen," Packers historian Lee Remmel said. "He had a great sense of timing."

Remmel said McGee once teased Lombardi when the coach showed the team a football on their first meeting and said, "Gentlemen, this is a football."

"McGee said, 'Not so fast, not so fast,' " Remmel said. "That gives you an index to the kind of humor that he served up regularly."

Old-Time Hockey at the Phone Booth

Saturday night's game between Washington and Pittsburgh got a little chippy in the third period.

Watch Georges LaRaque and Donald Brashear trade blows, the third time in their careers these two heavyweights have gone at it.

Alexander Ovechkin gets into the action as well, taking out fellow superstar Sidney Crosby.
Jordan Staal
then drops the gloves and falls an assist shy of achieving the Gordie Howe hat trick.

Women's Soccer Drops SUNYAC Finale

From Oswego State Athletics website:

Jennifer Anselmi
scored in the second half for New Paltz and it was the only goal of the game as the Hawks defeated the Oswego State women's soccer team 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Laker Field in Oswego.

Oswego State finished SUNYAC play with a 4-6-1 conference record and is
5-10-1 overall. New Paltz clinched a SUNYAC playoff spot with the win and Fredonia's 1-0 loss to Brockport. The Hawks are 5-3-3 in the conference and 7-6-4 overall.

Anselmi's goal came on an excellent individual effort as she dribbled on the right wing, past an Oswego State defender and poked a low shot past the Laker goalkeeper.

Scoring chances were minimal on a windy day in Oswego, but Oswego State goalkeeper Toby Klein made 11 saves in the contest. New Paltz goalkeeper Sarah Boccard had two saves in the game. Each team had five corner kicks.

The Lakers will play non-conference games this week at Clarkson on Wednesday and at home against Scranton on Saturday.

Coco Crisp, Soggy at Best

Anyone else have deja vu?

Well, maybe it's a bit early and a bit too drastic, but the Boston Red Sox are well on their way to almost repeating one of the greatest- nope THE GREATEST comeback in sports history.

Now if only they could get a center fielder that knew how to play. It's easy for Coco Crisp's god-awful numbers to get lost in translation. Look at all the big names that Boston marches to the plate: David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, Jason Varitek. These are all guys that Boston fans have to love. Hard workers (an exception with Manny) who all produce in some way, shape, or form.

Not to mention, baseball fans have been treated to the dawning of a new ace in Boston with Josh Beckett proving that he is a big game pitcher through and through. So if Boston's winning again and things are looking up, why complain about Coco Crisp?

His average through 8 games is a WHOPPING .161 with 2 RBI, 2 stolen bases, 9 strikeouts. Now, during the season Crisp did a little bit to calm the masses by posting 60 RBI and batting over .250. However, the man that was to come make Boston fans forget about Johnny Damon has done everything but that.

His play in the field at times can atone for some of his sins, but it'll take several more Hail Marys for this man to really feel wanted by Boston Red Sox fans. If I was Terry Francona, I would sit him. He is about as effective as Julio Lugo right now. Young Jacoby Ellsbury is riddled with talent, electric on the base paths, has got great pop in his bat, and brings a young, energetic presence on the field.

I hate to agree with Manny, its not the end of the world if this series isn't won. Of course I don't want my overpaid right fielder telling me this, but he is right to a degree. This isn't life or death, and sticking with Coco because you don't want Jacoby to make a crucial error doesn't cut it. Your job as manager is to put out the best product, and to have Jacoby sitting on the bench watching Coco Crisp haphazardly flail a piece of pine around isn't getting the job done.

If he makes a mistake, it won't cost Boston the series. There are far more reasons for that happening. Try having Bobby Keilty in your outfield to face lefties, or having J.D. Boo on your team at all. Or how bout Eric Gagne's refusal to find the strike zone, or Dice K MatzuSUCKa's decline (faster then Vanilla ice's career). Manny being Manny again doesn't help either. Those are the reasons for the Red Sox demise, should it happen.

I'm not saying Jacoby Ellsbury is the savior, but he certainly can't do much worse the Coco Crisp. It's time to put the cereal away and play some baseball.

Yanks Offer Paycut, Torre Declines

Joe Torre has turned down a one-year deal from the New York Yankees. The team says they offered the manager $5 million for the 2008 campaign. Torre earned $7.5 million this season. The deal reportedly offered up to $3 million in incentives, and a $9 million option for 2009 should the Yankees win the 2008 AL pennant. The deal would have been the richest among big league managers. Lou Pinella is now the league's highest-paid skipper, raking in $3.5 million a year from the Cubs.

Don Mattingly is reportedly the top candidate to replace Torre, despite a report in the Star-Ledger claiming he didn't want the job. Mattingly's agent declines that notion. Mattingly served as Yankee bench coach in 2007 and hitting coach from 2004-2006. Owner George Steinbrenner was reportedly impressed with Mattingly's work on Torre's staff. Team announcer Michael Kay echoed that sentiment in a 2006 interview with the NY Post.

"From everything that I have heard the Yankees are absolutely blown away by how great Don Mattingly has been as the hitting coach, his work ethic and his level of preparedness," said Kay. "I think when Joe Torre leaves, the next manager will be Don Mattingly."

Mattingly played all 14 seasons of his major league career in pinstripes, and was named the tenth Yankee captain in franchise history Feb. 28, 1991. He won the AL batting title in 1984, MVP award in 1985, and was named an all-star on six different occasions. Mattingly is the Yankee career leader in sacrifice flies and intentional walks. He also holds the franchise single-season mark for hits (238) and doubles (53), both of which he set in 1986. He has never managed.

New Site for OSAAW

Oswego State volleyball player Amanda Cipriano has been named the Oswego State Student-Athlete of the week. Additionally, Oswego State's athletic website has
created a page to archive the weekly awards.

Cipriano broke her own school record for digs in a match with 38 against Utica College on Saturday. She set the record earlier this year with 34 against St. John Fisher. The junior also surpassed 1,000 digs for her career and broke the 13-year-old record for career digs for the Laker volleyball team. That record was previously held by Jackie Houghton, who played for the Lakers from 1991-94.

Field Hockey Continues to Falter

The Oswego State field hockey team lost 3-2 in overtime to Houghton College Tuesday at Laker Field in Oswego, N.Y. The Highlanders were led by sophomore Ashley Hoffman’s two goals, including the game-winner in the ninth minute of overtime.

A pair of freshmen helped the Lakers force overtime. Lori Teaney scored her fourth goal of the season in the game’s 54th minute off an assist from Sara Budde to tie the score at 2-2.

Houghton junior Arryn Prince put the Highlanders up 2-1 in the 51st minute on a penalty stroke. Hoffman had tied the game at 1-1 in the 26th minute with her first goal on the day. She now has 20 goals for her career.

Oswego State sophomore Eileen O’Neill got the Lakers off to an early lead 1-0 with her second career goal in the 18th minute. Freshman goalkeeper Jamie Scharfe stopped 13 shots on the day.

Houghton has now won four of their last five games to improve their record to 6-8. Oswego State dropped their eighth decision in nine games to fall to 2-13. The Lakers return to action Thursday against Nazareth.

Gonna Miss Those Endless Frank TV Promos

The Colorado Rockies may have won the NL pennant in the wee hours of the morning last night, but the true winner from TBS's 2 weeks of playoff coverage was Frank Caliendo. The final tally of promos aired was 765. Mercifully, four of the five series TBS covered were sweeps, and only one (Indians/Yankees) went an extra game. So, just imagine how that count would have increased with some Game 5s or 7s. There is still a month before the show debuts. Only 625 Seinfeld and 342 Friends reruns away! I wonder if the superstation has anyother original programming. On the bright side, there are about 200 Dane Cook promos that haven't been aired yet, so don't put that fork away yet. You still might have to poke your eyes out. I won't post the video to save us all some the pain for the time being.

Mattingly to Yanks: I'm Not Ready

The Star-Ledger of NJ reports Don Mattingly told Yankee brass he's not ready to manage the club. The former clipper captain served as Joe Torre's bench coach this past season. Mattingly's name has surfaced as a possible successor to Torre should the Yanks fire their manager. YES Network broadcaster and 2006 NL Manger of the Year Joe Girardi is also a candidate, as is St. Louis skipper Tony LaRussa.

The Yankees made the 2007 playoffs after starting the season 21-29. Torre has guided the team into the second season in each of his 12 years as skipper. However, the Yankees have failed to advance past the first round of the playoffs in each of the past three seasons.

New York lost the ALDS to Cleveland in four games this season despite beating the Indians in all six of their regular season meetings. Yankee veterans Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera are both set to become free agents. Each has said they'll wait and see what happens to Torre before signing a contract.

Injury Update

I've spoken with injured Laker's defenseman Angie Friesen. As you may have seen below, Friesen was injured in the first period of the Laker's game vs. Napean. She was taken to the hospital in the second period on a stretcher. Having spoken to her yesterday, I can say that the news is nothing but good at the moment. Though her arm is in a sling, she says that it is an elbow injury, and that it is only bruised, and she will be returning to the lineup soon. We wish Angie the best of luck and a full and speedy recovery.

Polls Are Out; Oswego is #1

Oswego State will go into a season as the top-ranked team in the nation. Last season, the Lakers earned a co-#1 ranking in the Jan. 2 USCHO poll. This is the first time in school history that the Lakers are in sole possession of the top spot.

Oswego State was a near-unanimous #1, receiving 18 of 19 votes. Middlebury, the school Oswego State defeated in the national title game, received the only other first-place vote and is ranked third.

St. Norbert, the team Oswego State beat in the national semifinals is #2. They could face the Lakers Dec. 30th in the second round of the 2nd Annual Pathfinder Bank Oswego Hockey Classic.

Plattsburgh
also cracked the pre-season poll, they're ranked #14.

The Lakers' first opponent, Elmira, received 13 votes but didn't crack the top 15.

Check back for audio from Coach Gosek and the players.

Laker Injured

Oswego State's Angie Friesen was injured during Saturday's exhibition loss to the Nepean Wildcats. The 5-9 sophomore defenseman went down early in the game with what a appeared to be a wrist injury. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance. More on her condition later.

Erin Andrews

You may be asking yourself, "why the random picture of Erin Andrews?" Well I ask you, why are you questioning it?

Update: I guess Deadspin also decided to post a random Andrews shot today. Theirs went up about four hours before ours, bastards.

Boss No Longer

George Steinbrenner's reign as king of the Yankee empire ends here. The New York Post reports the 77-year-old billionaire relinquished his duties to his sons Hank and Hal. Hank Steinbrenner is now in charge of baseball-related decisions. He says his brother Hal Steinbrenner will oversee the construction of New Yankee Stadium.

There has been much speculation that the eldest Steinbrenner is in poor health. Franz Lidz portrayed him as "bloated" and dreadful-looking in the September edition of the Conde Nast Portfolio. The speculation only intensified after game three of the ALCS between Cleveland and New York.

The NY Daily News reports that Steinbrenner was approached by reporters after the game. He was asked about the status of manager Joe Torre's job. Writer Christian Red said Steinbrenner "stared blankly at the media for several seconds before security and his son-in-law Felix Lopez hustled the 77-year-old into his limo."

Would be a Mistake to Fire Torre

The Joe Torre Watch has entered Day 3, but it still appears unlikely he'll be back for Year#13 of his Yankee tenure. Torre, who has had this team in the playoffs every year under his watch is currently being twisted in the wind as Big Stein and his posse take their sweet time deciding his fate. If they truly want him gone, as it appears to be, they should have the decency to make it quick. Torre has been nothing but a class-act since joining the New York Yankees after the 1995 season.

But the act of firing the man who has had so much success here makes no sense. Who will the Yankees find that is better? Don Mattingly? Joe Girardi? Tony LaRussa (gags)? Torre is about as perfect for the Yankees job as it gets. Yeah, you can quiver over his bullpen decisions and being ultra-loyal to veterans that he loves (i.e. Mike Mussina, Hideki Matsui, etc), but he handles the pressure of New York and a crazy owner better than anyone. Torre handles the largest, toughest media in the world with ease. Furthermore, his calming influence has allowed a group of stars just to play ball. Had Mattingly taken over after the '06 loss to Detroit, would he, as a rookie manager, been able to get this team out of the hole they were stuck in around midseason. It's a little naive to say anyone can manage the Yankees just because they have a $200 million payroll. Yes, anyone with a pulse could win with the resources this team has, but would the egos be able to mesh like they have under Torre's watch? Tony LaRussa would micromanage this team to death, and thus turn off a bunch of egos. You think they'd want to play for that? You wouldn't see players giving the same kind of effort for him as they do for Torre.

Those fans who think Joe should go are just spoiled fans. He won 4 World Series in his first 5 years as manager. Had he spread those out we wouldn't even be having this discussion. Yes, he has had some bitter postseason defeats, but is it his fault his offense goes 6 for 28 with RISP in the playoffs? Is it his fault his ace, Chien-Ming Wang, stinks up the joint in Games 1 & 4? Is it his fault his young phenom, Joba Chamberlain, was eaten alive by a bunch of bugs who ended up causing him to throw the tying wild pitch in Game 2? Fans are taking for granted this man has led their team to the playoffs every year. Yes, the goal is to win it all, but who out there is going to be better in leading this team, in the immediate future, to a World Championship? Don Mattingly or Joe Torre? Not even an issue. Bring Joe back! How sweet would it be to see Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, and/or Alex Rodriguez hold out on coming back to the Yankees by saying they walk if ownership doesn't bring Torre back. Guess that won't happen with the amount of money they can pay those three to keep quiet.

It's Almost Here

Ballhype: hype it up!

The Oswego State Lakers will unveil their 2007 NCAA championship banner Friday night. Be there live or catch all the action on 88.9 FM WNYO Oswego, your home for live Laker athletics.

ALDS: BoSox Sweep, Yanks Force 4

The New York Yankees saved Joe Torre's job - for now. The Bronx Bombers scored four in the fifth and three in the sixth to erase a 3-0 deficit last night. Roger Clemens didn't survive the third inning, leaving with an injured hamstring. Phil Hughes came on in relief to throw 3 2/3 shutout innings. Joba Chamberlain threw two innings to set up Mariano Rivera's perfect ninth.

Johnny Damon blasted his second home run of the series and drove in four. Alex Rodriguez broke an 0-for-18 playoff slump with two hits. He is still looking for his first post-season RBI since the 2004 ALCS, but raised his second season batting average to .275 (.235 in pinstripes).

Tonight, Chien-Ming Wang takes the hill for the Yanks. Paul Byrd opposes him. Wang was shelled in game one, allowing eight earned runs on nine hits in less that five full innings of work. He has a lifetime playoff ERA of 6.00 in three starts. Byrd is 1-4 all-time against the Yankees with a 4.44 ERA. He lost an Aug. 11 home start against New York allowing seven runs in two innings.

The Boston Red Sox will face the winner of the series. They swept the Angels 9-1 last night.

Sept 17, 1st Place -------- Present Day

The Oswego State Lakers field hockey squad dropped their sixth game in a row today. The New Paltz Hawks took the 3-1 decision at Laker Field in front of 74 fans. New Paltz's Lauren Nicomini tallied her first two goals of the season and an assist in the effort.

Oswego State's Lauren Mastriano recorded her third goal on the season in the 67th minute to break up the shutout. Brittany Roetzer recorded an assist on the play. The Lakers are now 1-11 this season, 1-5 in the SUNYAC. They sit sixth in the conference standings, ahead of winless Morrisville.

At halftime the Lakers held a hula-hoop contest. Oswego State wrestler Jake Taylor came in fifth place. There were five participants.

SUNYAC Standings

Not one of the Oswego State fall athletic programs is in last place. Thank you, Morrisville. Women's soccer has got to be the biggest surprise this season. Under Liz McGrail in 2006 the girls went 1-15 (1-9 in SUNYAC). This season, they started 0-4 under new head coach Bian McGrane (we like our coaches Irish). They then reeled off four straight wins before dropping a 2-1 double-OT heart-breaker at RIT yesterday. Freshman goalkeeper Toby Klein (Westbury) has three shutouts and a 1.46 GAA. Sophomore Tricia Sullivan (pictured, #4) has led the offensive attack with six goals.

That was an Incredible Game!

The Colorado Rockies have completed the improbable by winning the NL Wildcard, in perhaps, the most exciting "regular season" game in MLB history. The Rockies won 14 of their final 15 games, and won the play-in game last night 9-8 in 13 innings over the San Diego Padres to claim the final spot in the 2007 MLB playoffs. An absolute incredible story by a team that many thought may never, ever make the postseason again. This team will now continue their unlikely run and head to Philadelphia, which is pretty much guaranteed to be a slugfest of a series.

Tonight's game was truly incredible. Even though MLB is economically flawed in many, many ways, it shows why baseball at its true core is the best sport on the planet. Every night you have a chance to see something new, and this game was definitely proof of that. A play-in game that goes 13 innings, and includes 4 ties and 4 lead changes is something special. Especially when you throw in the fact that the ultimate cinderella team completed the comeback off the all-time saves leader in the bottom of the 13th (even though Trevor Hoffman always stinks it up in the big spot). Wow! I'm anxiously awaiting ESPN Classic to air this as an Instant Classic. I never though a matchup of two NL West teams could be so much fun. Matt Holliday also locked up the NL MVP, in my opinion, with his big triple in the 13th. Even if he never actually touched homeplate on Jamey Carroll's sac-fly.

I also really enjoyed TBS's coverage of the game, and look forward to their LDS and NLCS coverage. It blows away FOX and ESPN MLB coverage by miles. The announcers were clearly into it, and knew their stuff fairly well. They aren't the Joe Buck play-by-play NFL sellouts, or analysts like Joe Morgan and Tim McCarver that think they know everything and have to speak dumb to their audience. I've also always loved Ernie Johnson, and Cal Ripken was a good in-game analyst. I'm wondering if Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley will jump out on set at some point . Turner sports is the best of the major sports carriers. Their NBA coverage has always been first rate, and now they are off and running with the MLB. Great work!

NYY over CLE in 4
NLDS
CHC over ARI in 4
PHI over COL in 5 (Colorado has been given 8:1 odds to make world series, good bet!)
ALCS
