Boss No Longer

George Steinbrenner's reign as king of the Yankee empire ends here. The New York Post reports the 77-year-old billionaire relinquished his duties to his sons Hank and Hal. Hank Steinbrenner is now in charge of baseball-related decisions. He says his brother Hal Steinbrenner will oversee the construction of New Yankee Stadium.

There has been much speculation that the eldest Steinbrenner is in poor health. Franz Lidz portrayed him as "bloated" and dreadful-looking in the September edition of the Conde Nast Portfolio. The speculation only intensified after game three of the ALCS between Cleveland and New York.

The NY Daily News reports that Steinbrenner was approached by reporters after the game. He was asked about the status of manager Joe Torre's job. Writer Christian Red said Steinbrenner "stared blankly at the media for several seconds before security and his son-in-law Felix Lopez hustled the 77-year-old into his limo."
