Men's Hoops Puts 5 in Double-Figures, Advances
The third-seed Lakers were able to jump out to a 36-26 halftime lead as they held six-seed Potsdam to 8-for-26 shooting in the first 20 minutes. The Bears were especially dismal from long-range, connecting on just one-of-eight from behind the arc.
Senior point guard Nick Perioli, playing with a heavily-bandaged thumb on his shooting hand, had a well-balanced game with twelve points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Sophomore Mahamoud Jabbi recorded his seventh double-double of the season with twelve points and 12 rebounds. The Lakers are 7-0 this season when Jabbi records pours in at least ten points while grabbing at least ten rebounds. The Lakers put all of their starters in double-figures as Dom White and Kyle Reuter each chipped in ten points.
Oswego State now advances to the conference semi-finals for the fourth consecutive season. They await the results of the other quarterfinal games to find out their opponent. The semi-final games and SUNYAC Championship will be hosted by top-seed Plattsburgh who beat Fredonia Tuesday night.

MAD MAGS: Lakers Win; Tempers Flare
The Oswego State men's ice hockey team escaped Cortland with a 3-0 win Saturday night. Freshman forward Joe Hall's second-period marker stood up as the game-winner. Senior goaltender Ryan Scott stopped all 37 shots he faced for his ninth career shutout. The SUNYAC regular-season finale saw its fair share of dramatic moments. In the first period, Oswego State's Peter Magagna and Cortland's Frank Rizzo had a brief shoving match prior to a face-off in the neutral zone.
Midway through the second, Magagna cracked Rizzo on the leg with his stick during a stoppage in play. Rizzo fell to the ice clutching his shin as Magagna was sent off with a two-minute minor for slashing. Rizzo stayed on the ice for his shift. Magagna would score his 11th goal of the season with less than two minutes remaining in the period to double Oswego State's lead to 2-0. Magagna also extended his career-best scoring streak to 13 games. Linemates Ryan Ellis and Brendan McLaughlin assisted on the goal. McLaughlin extended his point streak to a career-high 14 games.
Tempers would flare again in the third with the Lakers still holding the 2-0 lead. At the 16:41 mark, Cortland's Brent Fallon was given a game misconduct for roughing, and teammate Mike Maier was whistled for two minors, a cross check and a blow to the head. He was given a 10-minute misconduct. Magagna also received a 10-minute misconduct after another slashing minor. With just 3:19 left to play, Magagna and Maier were sent to the showers.
Unlike Oswego State's Campus Center Ice Arena, Cortland's Alumni Hall requires players from both teams to exit and enter the ice via the same tunnel between the benches. As Magagna made his way towards the locker room, Rizzo threw an object at him from the Cortland bench. Maier made his way to the tunnel soon after Magagna. As Maier escaped from view of the press box, a swarm of personnel from both the arena and the clubs were seen rushing towards the locker rooms. Fans seated on the bench-side bleachers rushed to the rails to see what was transpiring. The excitement would soon die down as order was restored and the action on the ice resumed.
As the dust settled, the Lakers found themselves with a 5-on-3 advantage. Senior co-captain Tony DiNunzio put Oswego State up 3-0 as he lit the lamp 30-seconds into the power play for his seventh goal of the season. All of DiNunzio's goals have come in the team's final ten regular-season games; he has 13 points during that stretch.Cortland's loss solidified them as the fifth-seed in the SUNYAC tournament. They entered the weekend looking like a solid bet to finish fourth and get home-ice advantage in Tuesday's playoff game. But that was before then-sixth-place Potsdam upset first-place Plattsburgh 4-2 on Friday, putting the Bears a point ahead of the Red Dragons for fourth. Cortland will now travel to Potsdam for Tuesday night's preliminary round playoff game. Hear the game here.
Sixth-seed Buffalo State will pay a visit to third-seed Fredonia for the second straight game. Hear the game here. The Blue Devils scored a 2-1 overtime win over the Bengals Friday night. Oswego State will host the highest-remaining seed at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Campus Centre. Ticket information is available here.

Women's Hockey Drops 4th Straight
The Oswego State women's ice hockey team lost 1-0 to Buffalo State for the second consecutive day, as the visiting Bengals scored the game's only goal early in the third period at the Campus Center Ice Arena in Oswego.Marissa McMullan banged in a rebound at the edge of the crease off a point shot from Mariah Fairgrieve at 1:52 of the third period. The lead held up over the game's last 18 minutes, with Oswego State's best chances coming in the final minute of the contest after goalie Hilary Hitchman was pulled for an extra attacker.
The Lakers also hit the crossbar with a shot early in the first period, but couldn't get any shots past Bengal goalkeeper Shannon Anesetti, who made 28 saves in picking up her second consecutive shutout. Hitchman made 34 saves for the Lakers.
Oswego State fell to 8-14-1 on the season and is now 3-11-0 in the ECAC Women's West. Buffalo State concluded its regular season with a 7-11-3 overall mark and a 5-9-2 league record. The Bengals are currently sixth in the ECAC Women's West and hold the final playoff spot in the league standings.

Playoff Hopes Dim For Women's Hockey
The Buffalo State Bengals scored the only goal of the game in the late stages of the third period in a 1-0 win over the Oswego State Lakers on Friday night at the Campus Center Ice Arena in Oswego. The only goal of the contest came with 4:37 left to play in the third period as Marissa McMullan scored on a wrister from the lower part of the left-wing circle, beating the Laker goalie on the near post. It was an unassisted goal and held up as the game-winner.
Scoring chances were hard to come by throughout the contest with the Lakers seeing two excellent opportunities turned aside by Bengal goalie Shannon Anesetti, who made 20 saves in the game. Laker freshman Erica Shapey had one shot ring off the post in the second period and was stopped by Anesetti on a clear breakaway early in the third.
Many of Buffalo State's best opportunities were off of deflections from point shots, but Laker goalie Hilary Hitchman and the defense did a nice job in front, with Hitchman finishing the contest with 23 saves.
Oswego State was 0-for-4 on the power play and Buffalo State was scoreless in three power-play opportunities.
The same two teams meet again on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Campus Center Ice Arena.

What Happened to Me Before My SB XLII Pick
I'm the catcher there, and apparently all of America (besides the sizable number of people who picked the Giants) are the catcher as well. Congrats New York Giants fans. There are no wins any better than that outside of you actually being a member of a winning team. I must say I am one jealous New York Jets fan this morning.

Zalewski Tallies Four Points as Lakers Survive Knights
As smooth as the sailing was for the Oswego State men's ice hockey team through the first 40 minutes of play Friday night, it was an equally rough final 20. The Lakers nearly blew a 4-0 lead as they narrowly avoided an upset with a 5-4 win over Geneseo at the Campus Center Ice Arena. The Lakers earned their 4-0 lead off of goals by Matt Whitehead and Brendan McLaughlin, sandwiched between a pair of markers from junior defenseman Rich Zalewski (pictured). The goal by McLaughlin was the 50th of his collegiate career. Senior goalie Ryan Scott shut the Knights out through the first two periods to bring his scoreless streak to 100 consecutive minutes. It was a familiar scene for the Knights who were blanked 5-0 by the Lakers at the Wilson Ice Arena nearly three months prior.
But Geneseo looked like an entirely different team coming out of the second intermission. Dave Schroeder scored his first goal of the season just over two minutes into the period. Geneseo then capitalized on an interference penalty to Whitehead and netted a power-play goal from Brendon French to cut the lead to 4-2. Midway through the period, Daniel Sullivan chased a puck down in the right wing corner and banked a shot in off of Scott to make it 4-3.
Oswego State was able to come up with a back-breaking answer with 6:17 to play as Tyler Lyon hustled to the edge of the Geneseo crease on a 2-on-2 and finished a feed from Ryan Ellis. The goal brought the Campus Center crowd to their feet and looked to be a demoralizing blow to Geneseo's comeback effort. But the Knights refused to roll over.
Trent Cassan lit the lamp on a Geneseo power play to cut the lead back down to one with 3:02 left to play. Ryan Scott had allowed the Knights to stay within reach despite his team's better than two-to-one advantage in shots on goal. Moments later, Geneseo's leading goal scorer Mathieu Cyr got a chance to tie the game on a partial breakaway. Scott made the save this time to preserve the 5-4 lead. He'd continue to deny the Knights as they brought on an extra attacker in the final seconds and the Lakers held on for two points in the SUNYAC standings.
The loss dropped Geneseo from the sixth and final playoff spot. Cortland moved ahead of the Knights and into a three-way tuie for fourth place with 11 points. Those two clubs square off Saturday night in Cortland. Meanwhile, the Lakers will try to defeat Brockport for the 10th straight time. Face-off is set for 7 p.m. with pre-game starting at 6 on 88.9 FM WNYO.

Ice Knights Come In Clinging To Last SUNYAC Playoff Spot
The Geneseo Ice Knights (6-13-0, 5-6-0) come to the Campus Centre Ice Arena trying to avoid a regular season sweep at the hands of Oswego State. Geneseo currently holds the sixth and final playoff spot in the SUNYAC. That's a far cry from where second-year coach Chrus Schultz had his club just a season ago. The Knights finished second in the conference standings in 2006-2007 with a 10-4-0 SUNYAC record.Prior to that, Geneseo won the SUNYAC post-season tournament in 2005 and 2006. High-scoring forwards Mitch Stephens and Mike MacDonald were big contributors to those teams, but were lost to graduation after last season. The team has yet to fill their void as only one player, senior Matthew Cyr, is averaging a point per game this season.
Meanwhile, #14 Oswego State (12-5-2, 8-2-1) remains one of the premiere programs in the SUNYAC. They earned some breathing room in second place after their shutout win Saturday in Potsdam. The Lakers bolstered their point total to 17 in the conference standings while third-place Fredonia was unable to keep pace, losing 4-3 to Geneseo to remain at 14 points.
The Lakers can clinch a spot in the SUNYAC tournament with a win tonight and a Cortland loss in Brockport. Also, two Lakers can reach another milestone as junior line-mates Ryan Ellis and Brendan McLaughlin need one goal each to reach 50 for their careers. Face-off is set for 7 p.m. on 88.9 FM WNYO.
