Own Goal Leads To Loss For Men's Soccer

The Oswego State men's soccer team fell to 0-2 on the season and finished fourth in the Flower City Classic after suffering a 1-0 defeat Sunday at the hands of St. John Fisher (1-1). The Cardinals scored midway through the first half when Oswego inadvertently kicked the ball into their own net on a clearing attempt. This marks the second consecutive season that the Lakers have finished in last place of Rochester's annual tournament.

Sophomore goaltender Eric Kukura was kept out of action after injuring his knee in Friday's loss to Rochester. Junior Nick Liberati started in his place and made three saves.

The Lakers return to action Sept. 6 when they host Nazareth (1-1) in the 2008 home opener at Laker Field. The Golden Flyers opened their season with a third-place finish at RIT's Doug May Classic, dropping a 1-0 overtime decision to #20 Hobart (2-0) before demolishing Gallaudet (0-2) 11-1. Fourth-year Laker coach Bob Friske is 0-3 against Nazareth in his tenure at Oswego.

The Oswego State volleyball team dropped two more matches in straight sets Saturday to finish the Oneonta Red Dragon Invitational with an 0-4 record. Potsdam (2-2) and Utica (1-3) each made quick work of the Lakers, who are just 1-7 in their last two appearances at the Red Dragon Invitational.

St. Lawrence's athletics site has then listed as losing to Union today and finishing the invitational in second place. SUNY Oneonta's site lists St. Lawrence as winners in all four of their weekend matches and the Lakers as losers in all four of their weeekend matches. More to come...

Laker Volleyball Loses Six of First Seven Sets

The Oswego State volleyball team kicked off the Oneonta Red Dragon Invitational and the 2008 season with a three sets to one loss to the host team (1-1) Friday. The Lakers (0-2) followed that defeat with a straight-sets loss to St. Lawrence (2-0). Oswego looked to rebound Saturday with a game against Potsdam at 10 a.m. followed by a 12:30 p.m. match with Utica. Results from those matches have yet to be released.

Introducing Chad Javon Ocho Cinco

Yea, thats correct. The showster, mouth-running, riverdancing, endzone celebrating wide out formerly known as Chad Johnson has officially changed his legal name to Chad Javon Ocho Cinco. The Cincinati Bengals wide reciever went to a court in Florida near his Miami home and had the process finalized this week.

I had to scower the Bengals website to find this story, it was hidden on their front page, but they are acknowledging these shenanigans. However, if you were to look on their official roster posted on the team website, you will find that Mr. Ocho Cinco, is still listed as "Chad Johnson". Perhaps they should just ignore the name change all together and list him as "Ocho Psycho".

And They're Off

The 2008-09 Oswego State Athletics season kicked off Friday as the men's soccer team (0-1) dropped a 2-0 decision at tenth-ranked Rochester (1-0) in the first round of the Flower City Classic. Rochester outshot Oswego 21-3 in the contest. This marks the third time in four seasons that Bob Friske's Lakers have started the season with a loss to the Yellowjackets.

This is at least the sixth straight season Rochester has defeated Oswego. Sophomore Eric Kukura got the start in net for the Lakers and stopped five of six shots on net he faced. He suffered a knee injury in the game's 72nd minute and was replaced by junior Nick Liberati.

The green and gold return to action Sunday against St. John Fisher (0-1). The Cardinals were shut out 4-0 Friday by SUNYAC member Cortland (1-0). The Red Dragons will face #10 Rochester at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Flower City Championship.

7th Inning; Out of Sight, Out of Mind

If you're on the disabled list, you're as good as dead to The Legendary Voice of the Yankees. Sterling began to play manager in the seventh when he brought up the fact that closer Mariano Rivera has been brought in earlier than usual lately. He begins to warn that this cannot continue, when Suzyn reminds him it won't.

Foul Play

Little League baseball has alwasy been a sport that has held my highest regards and respect. Being a former little leaguer myself, I know full well what these kids desire, which is to play the game for the purity of it. There is no greater joy than watching the Little League World Series on ESPN. Kids full of so much talent that it's mind blowingThe fields at Williamsport, Pennsylvania allow these kids to have a platfore to showcase their talent. So where is the justification in banning a kid because he's " too good "?

I'm talking about 10 year old Jerircho Scott. Scott plays for his little league team in Conneccticut wich currently holds an 8-0 record. Impressive right? But here's the kicker, little Jericho is being told by league officials that he is no longer allowed to pitch and play baseball because he throws too hard, Scott's fatball tops out at around 40 mph. At such a young age, being able to throw the ball across the plate from the pitcher's mound is considered an accomplishment, so the fact that the boy can throw as hard as he does, with control (Scott has yet to hit a batter he's faced) might suggest that Brian Cashman may have his eye on him already.

Here's my point. The kid has talkent and that's indisputable. So why would you deny a child the opportunity to do what he loves to do? The "adults" involved in this matter should all take a back seat and let Jericho Scott play baseball. Little League isn't about you.

U.S. Women Advance to Soccer Final

The United States women's soccer team defeated Japan 4-2 Monday to advance to Thursday's gold medal game. We update you on this for the sole purpose of posting a picture of Hope Solo. She's kind of like a Monet, or whichever artist is was that painted portraits that looked good from far away.

She also spouted off at the mouth last year after being benched in favor of Briana Scurry in the semifinal of the World Cup. The U.S. lost that game 4-0 to Brazil. Solo voiced her displeasure with coach Greg Ryan to the media (video below) and was banished from the team before the third-place match.

Famed Sports Talk Duo Splits

Chris "Mad Dog" Russo is a free agent after WFAN New York released the veteran sports talk host from his contract Thursday. Russo had been the co-host of "Mike and the The Mad Dog" alongside Mike Francesa since September 5, 1989. The duo changed the landscape of sports talk radio with their unique, contrasting styles. The YES Network began simulcasting the show on television in 2002. The show consistently drew high ratings throughout its run and flirted with a market share of 7.0 last year.

WFAN released a statement Thursday stating they had signed Francesa to a long term contract. He will now host a show in the same time slot as "Mike and the Mad Dog". Industry sources say Russo is likely to land with Sirius XM satellite radio.

Kevin Millar Calls Edwar Ramirez 'Cute'

Interesting note to pass along from the LoHud Yankee blog:

Kevin Millar was asked whether he thought Edwar Ramirez was throwing at him.

“One hundred percent,” he said. “I was upset they threw him out of the game because he’s really good hitting. He’s a cute little fellow, he doesn’t throw that hard and he doesn’t have very good stuff. So it’s probably a good idea they threw him out, because it probably would’ve been in Monument Park.”

That’s pretty funny. What’s even funnier is that Millar is 1 for 4 against Ramirez with three K’s.
