Men's Hockey Gets Help in Net

From the Watertown Daily Times:

Clarkson junior goaltender Tim Potter has left the university and will enroll at SUNY Oswego.

Potter, from Bakersfield, Calif., started two games this season, posted a .857 save percentage and a 5.94 goals-against average. He appeared in six career games for the Golden Knights after joining the program in January 2007.

Your Monday Morning D3 Hockey Power Rankings

Derek Dunning:

Not many games this week but still five top 15 teams were in action. The only game of significance though was at the Cooler in Geneva between Hobart and Oswego.

Hobart trounced the Lakers scoring six goals in the second period on their way to a 6-3 win. The only movement in my rankings were dropping Oswego out of the top 15 completely because at 8-5-1, they are not playing like a team that deserves to be ranked. 2-4 in their last six? Sorry, it's Geneseo's turn to be ranked until the Lakers prove they belong again.

Thought about dropping Norwich out for Eau-Claire but chose against it this week. However, if the Cadets falter at their tournament right after New Year's they'll likely be dropping out.

Ryan Maloney:

Not much movement with the light "weekend before finals" schedule. Like Dunning, my rankings don't show the Lakers. The team desperately needs stability between the pipes and hasn't been able to get it. Could there be a Golden Knight in shining armor on the way to rescue the season? Perhaps the team is under a spell and can only be rescued by Harry Potter-esque magic---alright, I'm done with that.

St. Olaf slides into the#14 slot. The Oles haven't lost since Nov. 8 and played pretty competitively with Norbert and Stout. Between Hamline, Olaf, and St. Thomas it should be an interesting race to the finish in the MIAC.
Looking at the numbers, Olaf's two-headed monster in net, freshman Ben Leis and sophomore Nick Krauss, seems like a potential x-factor in that race.

With Oswego falling out, someone has to move in. I decided to cut Nichols a break on their 10-0 loss to New England College. Yes, they play in the crap-tacular ECAC Northeast. However, having the second-best winning % of all 71 teams in D3 is good enough for a spot in the top 15. Does this mean I think they're a better team than Oswego? Yes, because I've never had to drive 90 minutes to see them disappoint me.

READER FEEDBACK FROM LAST WEEK:

Hey Derek how about a little side-by-side comparison, so your homer eyes can get cleared up a little, okay?

Oswego: 8-4-1
Geneseo: 9-3-1

Oswego: 5-2-1 SUNYAC
Geneseo: 5-2-1 SUNYAC

Oswego: 3-1-1 Home
Geneseo: 5-3-0 Home

Oswego: 5-2-0 Away
Geneseo: 4-0-1 Away

Oswego: 3-2-0 Last 5 games
Geneseo: 3-1-1 Last 5 games

Oswego: 0-1-0 vs Geneseo
Geneseo: 1-0-0 vs Oswego

Oswego: 2-3-0 vs Ranked teams (for some stupid reason, doesn't include Geneseo)
Geneseo:1-1-0 vs Ranked teams

Oswego: 8th in your rankings
Geneseo: Not in your rankings

What's that? The lenses in your glasses are green and gold? How about you take them off and get back to reality. At least your buddy Vampire Of The Loonybin was closer, even though he still screwed it up. "WTOP" Power Rankings, indeed. Get a clue.

As a third party, I have to say that Oswego's loss by 1 in OT to Plattsburgh looks a lot better than the 5-0 shutout Geneseo faced. Both teams have played 13 games, but Oswego has scored 60 goals to Geneseo's 44. Oswego has an acknowledged goalie issue, but still have given up only 7 more goals (40 vs 33). SUNYAC only numbers also favor Oswego, as Oswego has scored 37 and given up 23 to Geneseo's 28 & 24. Neither team can claim "bragging rights" based on their performance against Morrisville, both going to OT and neither losing - though Geneseo did score in OT. Oswego's 6-4 win, despite their 2-3 loss to Elmira (ECAC-W #1) looks slightly better than Geneseo's 3-2 win and 3-4 loss to Neumann (ECAC-W #2). Oswego's 11-3 thumping of Brockport is far better than Geneseo's 2-7 loss.

In conclusion, both teams are favorably matched, as shows with them tied for second in the SUNYAC, but IMHO, despite Oswego's 2-4 loss to Geneseo, Oswego as a whole, is better than Geneseo at this point in the season.

(In an attempt to be a bit more reasonable voice from Geneseo I'll offer this):

It depends on your definition of power rankings. I would say if you define PWR Rankings as " Best Players " or " Most potential " then certainly Oswego has a strong case to be higher than Geneseo. If you define PWR Rankings as " Who would you least want to play in a game tomorrow" then Geneseo could be ahead of Oswego.

Geneseo showed improvement this past weekend from the Oswego game as they started to strut their stuff offensively. DeCosse's sweep across the crease, Galan's rocket off the criss - cross passing on the PP, and Panetta's bar down shorty were three highlight reel plays in one weekend.

Based on what I saw at least "flashes" of in the game at Oswego the lakers can be a very scary team if they can get comfortable with their goalie situation and find consistency amongst the skaters.

I believe the Oswego game was more of a "jumping off" point for Geneseo and not their peak. Assuming Oswego rights the ship and Geneseo continues on their upward trend the game on Feb 14 could be a top 10 matchup.

Naz Tops 100, Beats Men's Hoops

Senior guards Tommy Downing and Kyle Reuter combined to score 58 points, shooting 51.2 percent (21 of 41) from the floor with six 3-pointers, but host Nazareth College had four of five starters score in double figures to fight off an early Laker first-half lead and late second-half charge to come away with a 104-94 win in a non-conference matchup on Saturday, Dec. 13.

Downing played all 40 minutes for Oswego (5-2), scoring a team-high 30 points on 11 of 20 field goal shooting, connecting on three 3-pointers, making five of eight free throws, and pulling down six rebounds. Downing scored nine points in the stretch, followed by five from Reuter and three free throws from sophomore Jamal Lightbourne. But Nazareth scored 12 unanswered points as part of a 15-2 run to retake the lead, 41-34 with 2:48 remaining in the half and never trailed for the rest of the game.

Women's Hoops Drops 2nd Game In As Many Nights

Oswego State got 28 points and 14 rebounds from freshman forward Kayla Ryan (Schaghicoke/Hoosick Valley) and 20 points from senior Heather Merino (Massena), but the Lakers were held to 22.2 percent shooting from the floor (8-for-36) in the second half, while host Farmingdale State shot 44 percent (11-for-25) from the floor and 85.7 percent (12-for-14) from the line in the half in dropping their second straight loss in a 66-57 decision to the Rams on Saturday, Dec. 13.

Only five Lakers managed to score points, with the remaining three scoring no more than five points.

The Lakers would pull to within four points (58-54) on a layup by Ryan with 3:55 remaining, but the Rams ran off six straight points to increase the lead to ten points with 1:10 to play to secure the victory.

Only three Lakers were able to score in the second half, with Ryan and Merino scoring 11 points each, and Wanda Sanchez (Bronx/Louis D. Brandeis) adding three points.

Hobart Beats Men's Hockey For 2nd Straight Year, 3rd Time Ever

HOBART, N.Y. -- The 35th meeting between the Oswego State and Hobart men's ice hockey programs bore some resemblance to the Gunfight at the the O.K. Corral as the Statesmen came away with a 6-3 victory. An abundance of offense made for exciting up-and-down play as the two teams combined to put 80 shots on net this afternoon at the Geneva Recreation Complex.

The Lakers looked like a team determined to earn another quality win on their resume early on. They capitalized on their first power play in the game's sixth minute as Matt Whitehead took a cross-crease feed from Chris Laganiere and buried it for his sixth goal of the season and a 1-0 Laker lead. The penalty kill unit continued the special teams clinic by killing off all three of Hobart's first-period power plays as Oswego made its way to the locker room with their one-goal lead intact.

The second period started much like the first, with the Lakers converting on the man advantage. This time it was Laganiere recording the marker, redirecting a Tyler Lyon slapper to beat Statesmen netminder Keith Longo and give Oswego State a 2-0 lead.

Through the first 24 and a a half minutes of action the Lakers had killed off all three of Hobart's power play chances while converting on two of their four. Senior goaltender Chris Hyk had been tested often but looked poised to pick up his 14th career victory. That all changed in a matter of moments.

Laker defenseman Jared Anderson was whisteled for interference with 15:28 remaining in the second period. Hobart winger Nick DeCroo took advantage off the extra man as he received a pass at the top of the left circle, split two green sweaters to gain the high slot and beat Hyk with a wrister. Oswego State's lead had been cut in half, but that was just the tip of the iceberg.

Midway through the second, senior blueliner Michael Steiner brought the puck in on the left wing and sent it towards the net from the point. The puck glanced off of Hyk's left pad and crossed the goal line to tie that game at 2-2 on the first even strength goal of the afternoon.

Things would only get worse for the senior backstop and the defense in front of him. The Statesmen scored two four-on-four goals in a span of 181 seconds, then tacked on another marker just 33 seconds after that. The final nail in the Laker coffin would be a shorthanded goal by sophomore Michael Wallace to put Hobart up 6-2 with 2:01 left in the second. Junior defenseman Tyler Lyon had brought the puck off the end boards and in front of his own net before Wallace bumped him off on with an agressive forecheck.

Oswego State would add a power play goal by Peter Magagna to cap off an eight-goal period, but that would be the last time the either lamp was lit. Hobart's 6-3 victory over the Lakers marks the first time the Statesmen have scored consecutive victories over Oswego State in 35 meetings. Hobart beat the Lakers 5-2 last season at the Campus Center Ice Arena. The all-time series still favors Oswego State 31-3-1.

Oswego State players will leave campus and head home on the 17th before returning to campus on the 28th. They will play host to the third annual Pathfinder Bank Oswego Hockey Classic on Jan. 2 and 3.

Freshman forward Kayla Ryan scored a team leading 17 points, connecting on seven of 11 free throws, while junior Rachel Kohrs and senior Heather Merino tallied 11 points apiece, but Oswego State could not build upon a nine-point halftime lead as host Hamilton College shot 86.7 percent (13 of 15) from the free-throw line in the second half and 85.7 percent for the game, while getting a game-high 22 points from senior Sydney Fasulo (pictured) en route to a 68-61 win over the Lakers in a non-conference contest on Friday, Dec. 12 at Hamilton.

Kohrs, who hit 4-for-5 from three point range, led all scorers in the first half with 11 points, making three of five 3-pointers, while Ryan followed with 10 points, pulling down nine of her team-leading nine rebounds in the half, as the Lakers led for the entire opening half, taking a 31-22 lead into the locker room.

Fasulo scored 12 points in the second half, connecting on all eight free-throw attempts, while classmate Laura Wetmore tallied nine of her 14 points in the half as the Continentals (5-2) slowly cut into Oswego’s 31-22 halftime lead in the opening 7:22 of the second half, taking their first lead of the game, 42-41, on a jumper with 12:38 to play in the half.

There were seven lead changes and three ties over a three-minute stretch before Hamilton took the lead to stay (51-49) on a layup with 9:28 remaining, starting a 6-0 run in opening up an eight-point lead. The Lakers would pull to within three points on two occasions, the last coming on a three-pointer by sophomore Traci Bacon (Massena) with 2:39 to play to cut the lead to 62-59. Bacon, the lone player on either team to play all 40 minutes, contributed eight points, four steals, three assists, and a blocked shot.

Hamilton finished the game on 6-2 run to secure the win, with Fasulo scoring four points on a layup and a pair of free throws, and Wetmore hitting a pair from the line with 19 seconds remaining.

The Lakers wrap up the fall-semester schedule on Saturday with a 4 p.m. non-conference game at Farmingdale State.

Introducing the WNYO D3 Hockey Power Rankings

DEREK DUNNING:

1.Plattsburgh- The class of the field. Still unbeaten and have fended off Oswego, Norwich, Elmira, St. Thomas and Geneseo.

2.Superior- Beast of the west so far knocking St. Norbert from their throne. They've ran the guantlet in the NCHA so far and are perfect in conference at 6-0 beating every NCHA team but St. Scholastica, who they havent played yet.

3.Middlebury- The winners of 8 of the last 14 D-III National titles are off to a perfect 6-0 start this year. Solid wins over St. Thomas and Norwich for the winners of the 2008 Primelink Great Northern Shootout. However, the toughest part of the schedule is left to come with Plattsburgh, Norwich, Bowdoin, and Curry.

4.St. Norbert- The defending national champions have been bit by the inconsitency bug for the first time in the last eight years. They have three losses already this year and their most since 2001-2002 season has been 5. The Green Knights have dominated the NCHA for the better part of this decade but this year are facing their toughest challenge yet.

5.Elmira- Elmira leads the always tough ECAC West conference heading into the break. They've played arguably the toughest schedule in the country so far this year with wins over Oswego, Neumann, Hobart (2). Their losses have been to Plattsburgh and Oswego, both on the road and then Manhattanville.

6.St. Scholastica- The Saints have won five straight games with wins over Oswego, Eau-Claire, and Stevens Point. Eau-Claire and St. Norber are quality losses but the River Falls loss hurts right now. Four games in a row they should win before a big three game homestand against Superior, Stout, and River Falls.

7.Stout- After losing four of six, the Blue Devils have gone on an impressive four game win streak with wins over Stevens Point, Eau-Claire, and St. Norbert. Three of four losses have been to very good teams in Hamline, Superior, and St. Scholastica.

8.Oswego- Similar to St. Norbert, the 2007 national champions can't seem to find any consistency. They have three tough one goal losses to Elmira, Plattsburgh, and St. Scholastica. Good wins over St. Norbert and Elmira. They face a crucial non-conference game this saturday @ Hobart which could give the Lakers some much needed momentum heading into the second half.

9.Adrian- While the Bulldogs 10-1-1 record is impressive on first glance. Adrian's only real quality win is against Neumann. The Knights also handed Adrian their only loss and for a team that cannot afford any mistakes with the weak conference they play in, they've also tied Potsdam. Adrian will need to run the table pretty much if they have any hope of trying to garner an at-large bid.

10.Manhattanville- The Valiants have rebounded after a slow start garnering just one point from Neumann in three games. However, the Valiants swept Elmira and Hobart on the road this past weekend to push their record to 5-2-1. Their schedule gets a little easier in the early part of January before they head back into the ECAC West gauntlet for late January and all of February.

11.Neumann- The Knights have played a brutal schedule much similar to Elmira's with wins over Geneseo, Adrian, Manhattanville (2). Their losses have all been to quality opponents in Geneseo, Adrian, Elmira and Hobart. Neumann has a big game with Norwich in the Times-Argus that they could use a win in.

12.Hobart- The Statesmen have had an up and down season as well so far this year. They have two solid wins over Curry and Neumann so far and three of their four losses were to quality opponents in Elmira (2), and Manhattanville. The Buffalo State loss hurts them a bit but they can make up for it with a big game against Oswego saturday.

13.Hamline- The Pipers have quietly gone about their business in the MIAC and have a 9-2 record heading into the break. They have one good win over Stout and have lost to Superior and Scholastica. They have two chances to pick-up two quality wins at home against Eau-Claire and Stevens Point on Jan. 9 and 10.

14.Norwich- The Cadets season is young due to the late start of the ECAC East schools and they've had mixed results so far. No solid wins yet but they did tie Plattsburgh and played Middlebury very tight in a 3-2 loss. Hamilton loss hurts a bit but they'll have a chance to redeem themselves with a big stretch where they could possibly play Neumann, Elmira, and Plattsburgh all in a row.

15.Bowdoin- The Polar Bears just dropped their first game of the season to Skidmore 6-4. Other than that the've been rolling along with wins over Babson, UMass-Dartmouth, and Colby. The jury is still out on how good those three teams are but 5-1-1 is good none the less and you have to play your schedule.

Francois' Career Night Nears Laker Record

Junior transfer Stanley Francois continues to pay dividends for the men's basketball team. The former Cobleskill Fighting Tiger poured in 26 points to match his 26 rebounds in a 76-61 win over visiting Morrisville Saturday night. A crowd of around 400 at the Max Ziel Gymnasium nearly saw a 40-year-old school mark broken, as Francois' rebound tally fell just five short of Greg Wilson's ('68) total of 31 at Utica on Jan. 30, 1968. Francois is on pace to pull down 328 rebounds on the season, which would be the third-highest single-season total in Laker history.

Oswego State's victory evened their conference mark at 1-1 and improved their overall record to 5-1. The Lakers had suffered a buzzer-beater loss at Geneseo earlier in the week, a play which found it's way to the ESPN highlight reel. They'll return to action next Saturday with a game at Nazareth.

Ryan Leads Women's Hoops Over Morrisville

Oswego State freshman Kayla Ryan dropped 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the women's basketball team to a 60-52 win over Morrisville Saturday night. After recording a combined 14 points in her first two collegiate games, Ryan has averaged more than 17 points per contest over the past two weeks. That includes a 30-point outburst against Ithaca College in which she again collected 11 rebounds.

The victory improved the Lakers' conference mark to 2-0 and their overall record to 4-2. They return to action Friday night when they pay a visit to Hamilton.

Williams' 50 Saves Not Enough For Women's Hockey

For the second game in as many nights, Oswego State kept the score close for two periods against fifth-ranked Rochester Institute of Technology, but once again a strong third period by the Tigers led to a substantial victory, this time by a score of 5-0.

RIT (8-1-1, 6-1-1 ECAC West) opened the scoring at 5:29 of the first period on a goal by sophomore forward Kylie Mazzetta. The period ended with the Lakers (4-5-1, 2-5-1 ECAC West) getting outshot 17-1.

The Tigers began to pull away in the third period on Mazzetta’s second goal of the night just 31 seconds in. The Lakers never had an answer, only testing RIT goaltender Amy Torgerson 11 times during the game.

Despite a 50-save effort by Oswego State goaltender Emi Williams, the Lakers couldn’t keep it close in the end, and Torgerson picked up a shutout victory.

So About That Buzzer Beater Video...

Apparently ESPN was also impressed with Scott Morton's Tuesday night heroics and made the Geneseo guard's buzzer beater their top play on SportCenter today. Morton was even interviewed via phone by First Take lush host Dana Jacobson:

Video: Men's Hoops Loses on Circus Shot

Senior guard Tommy Downing (Staten Island/Curtis) scored a team-leading 26 points, scoring on a layup with three seconds remaining in the game to give Oswego State a one-point lead, but host SUNY Geneseo threw the inbounds pass the length of the court, missing the layup but scoring on the rebound with a no-look, over-the-shoulder lob from leading scorer Scott Morton to come away with an 85-84 lead over the Lakers on Tuesday, Dec. 2 in the SUNYAC opener for both teams.

Downing, who finished shooting 44 percent (11 of 25) from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers, and dished out a game-high seven assists, was one of three starters in double digits for Oswego State (4-1 overall, 0-1 SUNYAC). Senior guard Kyle Reuter (Mexico) followed with 20 points, connecting on eight of 15 shots from the floor, going 3-for-5 from behind the arc, and junior Stanley Francois (Valley Cottage) registered a “double-double” with 15 points (5-for-7 shooting from the floor, making five of eight free throws), and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Women's Hoops Snaps Skid With Conference Win

Junior guard Tricia Sullivan (Copenhagen) was one of three players to score in double digits, registering her first career “double-double” with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to help Oswego State snap a two-game losing streak with a 66-60 win over host SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday, Dec. 2. It was the conference opener for both teams.

Sullivan, who played 39 of 40 minutes for the Lakers, pulled down five rebounds on offense and defense, dished out a game-high tying three assists and registered a pair of steals.

Freshman forward Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke/Hoosick Valley) led all scorers with 16 points, hitting 5-for-8 from the field goals (2-for-2 from three-point range), 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, and pulling down nine rebounds. Senior guard Heather Merino (Queensbury/Lake George) followed with 14 points, also making 5-for-8 field goals, and grabbed seven rebounds as the Lakers (3-2 overall, 1-0 SUNYAC) shot 40 percent (22 of 55) from the line with six 3-pointers, while holding the Blue Knights (1-4, 0-1 SUNYAC) to 28.6 percent (16 of 56) shooting from the floor.

Oswego held a 35-24 halftime advantage at Merino scored 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the floor, and Ryan followed with nine points, hitting all three shots from the floor, including a three-pointer, making both free throws, and pulling down six rebounds.

Geneseo managed to cut the lead to six points (44-38) on a three-pointer with 11:20 to play, but the Lakers answered with an 11-0 run over a 5:20 stretch, with junior guard Rachel Kohrs (New Lebanon) scoring five of her eight points in the run, to increase the lead to 54-38. Oswego was never threatened for the remainder of the game, leading by as many as 19 points (61-42) on a three-pointer by Sullivan with 3:20 to play.

Sophomore guard Traci Bacon (Massena) finished with nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals, while sophomore Erin Ostrander (Angelica/Genesee Valley) rounded out the scoring for the Lakers with seven points, four rebounds ans three assists.

Oswego will take on Morrisville State in its SUNYAC home opener on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 6:00 p.m.

#5 Roch Routs Women's Hoops by 33

The Oswego State women’s basketball team was held to 29.3 percent shooting from the floor, while the University of Rochester had three players in double-digits and shot 52.5 percent from the floor en route to a 77-44 win over the Lakers in a non-conference matchup on Sunday, November 30 at Max Ziel Gymnasium.

The Yellowjackets an NCAA Division III “Sweet 16” participant last year, are ranked fifth in the latest Women’s Collegiate Basketball Association (WBCA)/USA Today NCAA Division III national poll and improve to 4-0, while the Lakers (2-2) dropped their second straight game.

Oswego’s only lead came in the game’s opening minutes, when sophomore Traci Bacon (Massena) hit the front end of a two-shot free throws before the Rochester answered with a 23-4 run to take a commandnig 23-5 lead with 9:29 remaining in the half. The Yellowjackets would finished the half with a 44-15 lead, shooting 53.1 percent (17-for-32) from the floor with five 3-pointers, while the Lakers were held to 21.7 percent shooting from the floor (5-for-23).

No player scored in double digits for Oswego, who were led by senior co-captain Heather Merino (Queensbury/Lake George) with nine points. Sophomore Erin Ostrander (Angelica/Genesee Valley) and senior Shelly Washington (Buffalo/Seneca) each tallied seven points, with Washington pulling down seven rebounds.

Melissa Alwardt and Julie Marriott were the top scorers for Rochester with 11 points each, with Alwardt dishing out a game-high, eight assists, while Alex Porter turned in the “double-double” with 10 points and 10 rebounds and registered four steals.

The Lakers open SUNYAC play on the road on Tuesday, December 2 with a 6 p.m. contest at SUNY Geneseo, followed by a home conference matchup with Morrisville State four days later (Dec. 6) at 6 p.m.

Live Blogging the Lakers

The Oswego State Lakers are moments away from their match-up in Wisconsin with St. Scholastica. Like any good blogger, I'm following the action from my parents basement. The WNYO studio was on lockdown over Thanksdiving break preventing us from broadcasting the games. Today's game is being broadcast on 560 The FAN Duluth/Superior.

1ST PERIOD

*Chris Hyk is starting in net again.

*The Lakers have had a few good possessions as the Saints were forced to stay on the ice for a couple of long shifts.

*The FAN 560 takes commercial breaks during the period, but I don't think the officials stop the game for them. I hear last night's OT winner for the Saints happened while the station was in a break...doh!

*Less than six minutes to play and still no score. No penalties either, this is a very quick period.

*Chamberlain, Whitehead and McLaughlin are together on a line for the second straight night.

*St. Scholastica just hit the post on a great scoring chance as we near intermission.

*That'll do it for the first twenty minutes, no score from the Cornerstone Community Center. Lakers outshoot the Saints 6-5 and neither team commits a penalty.

2ND PERIOD

*Reisweber takes a loose puck on the right side of the neutral zone, brings it in on the wing, angles out in front of the net and scores. He seems to have a knack for doing that in Wisconsin. 1-0 Lakers 4:15 into the period.

*Jeff Gagnon quickly tied it at 1-1 with a PPG for the Saints.

*Joe Hall rips one past Steve Bounds...2-1 Lakers and that's three goals in as many minutes.

*Make it four markers in five minutes as Trevor Geiger beats Hyk, 2-2.

*Rich Zalewski takes the ice for the Lakers and Trevor Geiger immediately scores again. Coincidence? 3-2 Saints. (Note: The announcer said Zalewski was on the ice, but the box score doesn't show his name)

*Hank Van Boxmeer rips one past Bounds for a PPG, 3-3 with 7:02 left in the middle. Six goals have been scored in 8:43! Correction: Joe Hall is credited with a redirect goal, his second marker of the afternoon.

*SCOOOORE! Tyler Lyon with a blue line blast giving the Lakers a 4-3 lead with less than four minutes remaining in the second. Correction: Matt Whitehead is credited with a redirected goal.

*This is getting to be ridiculous. St. Scholastica ties it as the puck is dragged in by an Oswego defender. 4-4.

*Saints going on a PP as Van Boxmeer is whistled for holding with just over a minute left.

*PPG for the Saints. Nine goals this period. 5-4 St. Scholastica.

*That's all for the second. Nine goals in the final 14 minutes. I feel for the radio producer, "Captain." He was unable to get the goals edited in time for the intermission recap.

3RD PERIOD

*Lakers have out-shot the Saints 17-15. Five goals on only 15 shots for St. Scholastica!

*Oswego goes on the power play early in the third. Van Boxmeer is denied twice by Bounds. Lyon put a backhanded shot just high as the Lakers continue to apply the pressure on the PP.

*You have to wonder whether or not Paul Beckwith is in uniform tonight. Last night's box score showed Tyler Laws as the backup goalie for Oswego.

*Neither team able to capitalize on a PP chance this period. We're midway through the third, still 5-4 Saints.

*Lakers going on the PP as Whitehead is able to draw a hook on one of the Saints. Less than five minutes remaining.

*Saints kill Oswego's PP, even strength hockey with less than three minutes to play.

*Less than two minutes remain and the Lakers need a goal to force OT.

*Under a minute to go and Hyk has made two big saves as the Lakers cannot clear the puck.

*Oswego never gets the puck out of their own end in the final minute and lose 5-4.

Lakers Hold Off Green Knights: Magagna Gets 100th Career Point

In the inaugural St. Norbert Thanksgiving Holdiday Tournament, the sixth ranked Lakers defeated the third ranked St. Norbert Green Knights 4-3. The Lakers came into the Green Knights home arena (the Cornerstone Community Center) off a Jekyll and Hyde performance last weekend. But, the Lakers shook off the rust from the Geneseo game and got right down to business.

Derrell Levy slipped the puck past St. Norbert's Blake Bashor for the first goal of the game at 10:09 into the first (assist to Garren Reisweber). The Lakers quickly gave the Green Knights a shot to tie the game up in the middle of the period committing two penalties. But, the penalty kill unit and goaltender Chris Hyk held out long enough to get back to full strength. The first ended with a series of penalties for both teams, but ended with the Lakers clinging to a slim margin.

The Green Knights started off the second period on the powerplay after a Ryan Ellis penalty late in the first. The penalty carried over, but things got worse for the Lakers as six men ended up on the ice costing them yet another skater. Green Knight Nick Tabisz took advantage of the situation on the 5 on 3 and fired a shot past Hyk from the top of the left circle at 1:08. The Green Knights and the crowd at the Cornerstone got a quick boost of confidence off the stick of Tabisz. But, exactly a minute later Brad Dormiedy carried the puck into the offensive zone somehow eluding a defender and found Neil Musselwhite for a breakaway shorthanded goal. This goal would prove to be the game changer for the Lakers as Musselwhite's goal propelled a solid offensive outburst in the second. Senior forward Mark Lozzi scored at 14:56 and senior captain Peter Magagna scored the eventual game winner at 18:52. The goal for Magagna gave him his 100th career point as a Laker.

The Green Knights, however, didn't go down without a fight. A.J. Gale put the Green Knights on his back scoring two goals late in the third period cutting the Laker lead to one. The Lakers were clearly back on their heals with five minutes left in the game, but they stood up to the onslaught. Chris Hyk and the Laker defense stepped up in a big way and closed the door on the Green Knights ending their bid at a wild comeback.

The Lakers (7-2-1) will play St. Scholastica tomorrow at 4:30. After tomorrow nights game the Lakers will make the trek up north to face Plattsburgh (#1) and Potsdam.

Three Laker Athletes Earn Conference Honors

She swam exhibition in the 200-yard individual medley, but posted the fastest time of all competitors for the event in 2:18.65.

Reuter (Mexico) reached the 1,000-career point mark and garnered tournament Most Valuable Player honors in leading Oswego (4-0), to a 3-0 week. He scored a game-high tying 22 points in a 104-67 mid-week win over Cazenovia College, becoming the 13th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. At the SUNY Old Westbury Panther Classic, Reuter averaged 22 points in two games, shooting 50-percent (14-for-28) from the field, and 53.3 percent (8-for-15) from the three-point line in helping Oswego to the team championship, scoring a game-high 30 points in a xx-xx win over Brooklyn College in the title game to garner MVP accolades.

Selleck (Shanley, ONT), scored four goals and added an assist in a pair of weekend conference contests in being named the SUNYAC Ice Hockey Rookie of the Week.
