The Yellowjackets an NCAA Division III “Sweet 16” participant last year, are ranked fifth in the latest Women’s Collegiate Basketball Association (WBCA)/USA Today NCAA Division III national poll and improve to 4-0, while the Lakers (2-2) dropped their second straight game.
Oswego’s only lead came in the game’s opening minutes, when sophomore Traci Bacon (Massena) hit the front end of a two-shot free throws before the Rochester answered with a 23-4 run to take a commandnig 23-5 lead with 9:29 remaining in the half. The Yellowjackets would finished the half with a 44-15 lead, shooting 53.1 percent (17-for-32) from the floor with five 3-pointers, while the Lakers were held to 21.7 percent shooting from the floor (5-for-23).
No player scored in double digits for Oswego, who were led by senior co-captain Heather Merino (Queensbury/Lake George) with nine points. Sophomore Erin Ostrander (Angelica/Genesee Valley) and senior Shelly Washington (Buffalo/Seneca) each tallied seven points, with Washington pulling down seven rebounds.
Melissa Alwardt and Julie Marriott were the top scorers for Rochester with 11 points each, with Alwardt dishing out a game-high, eight assists, while Alex Porter turned in the “double-double” with 10 points and 10 rebounds and registered four steals.
The Lakers open SUNYAC play on the road on Tuesday, December 2 with a 6 p.m. contest at SUNY Geneseo, followed by a home conference matchup with Morrisville State four days later (Dec. 6) at 6 p.m.
