Men's Hockey Trounces Cortland in Conference Opener


CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman forward Eric Selleck and senior forward Matt Whitehead (Newmarket, ON/Newmarket Hurricanes) each recorded two goals and one assist as nationally sixth-ranked Oswego defeated Cortland, 6-1, in the SUNYAC opener for both teams.

Freshman defenseman Hank Van Boxmeer (Orange, CA/Salmon Arm Silverbacks) and senior Brendan McLaughlin (Brampton, ON/Brampton Capitals) each added a goal and an assist for the Lakers (2-1, 1-0 SUNYAC). Senior goalie Chris Hyk (Hamilton, ON/Georgetown Raiders) stopped 31 of 32 shots on goal for the victory.


Sophomore forward Jarrett Gold (East Setauket/NY Bobcats) scored the lone goal for Cortland (1-3, 0-1 SUNYAC), assisted by junior forward Patrick Palmisano (Ann Arbor, MI/Bay State Breakers) and sophomore forward Greg Haney (Marcellus/National Sports Academy). Freshman Mike Reilly (New York City/Bismarck Bobcats) started in goal and made 30 saves while allowing five goals over the first two periods. Sophomore Dan Jewell (Medford/National Sports Academy) recorded 15 saves and gave up just one goal in the third period.


Oswego took a 3-0 lead after the first period. McLaughlin scored off a rebound just 38 seconds into the game, followed by Selleck goals at the 9:51 and 16:04 marks, the latter on a power play. The Lakers extended their lead to 5-0 in the second period on two goals by Whitehead.


Cortland broke up the shutout bid on Gold’s tally 8:49 into the third period. Oswego completed the scoring when Van Boxmeer scored with 1:33 remaining.


The Lakers will return to the Campus Center Ice Arena on Saturday to face third-ranked Elmira College in a 7 p.m. matchup. The Soaring Eagles defeated Oswego in their first meeting two weeks ago, 3-2.
