SUNYAC Release:
FREDONIA – The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced its 2008-09 Ice Hockey Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year awards.
Oswego freshman forward Eric Selleck (Shanley, Ont.) was named the 2008-09 SUNYAC Rookie of the Year. In conference play, he scored nine goals and ten assists, as the Lakers (17-7-1, 11-4-1) worked their way to the No. 2 seed in the SUNYAC Playoffs. Twice this year Selleck earned SUNYAC Rookie of the Week honors (Feb. 2 and Nov. 24).
The 2008-09 Herb Hammond Most Valuable Player of the Year was Plattsburgh sophomore goaltender Bryan Hince (Tillonsburg, Ont.). Herb Hammond was a coach for 12 years at Oswego and two additional years at Plattsburgh. He was named National Coach of the Year in 1981 while coaching at Plattsburgh. He has since spent 17 years as an NHL scout for several teams. Hince finished the season at 13-0-1 during SUNYAC play, recorded three shutouts, and had a .937 save percentage. Plattsburgh has been ranked first in the country in Division III for twelve straight weeks, and earned the number one seed in the Conference tournament. Hince earned Goaltender of the Week honors seven times this season.
Plattsburgh’s head coach Bob Emery earned Coach of the Year honors. The Cardinals (22-1-2, 15-0-1) placed first in SUNYAC regular season play. This is Emery’s fifth time being voted Coach of the Year. The Cardinals will host no. 4 seed Brockport Saturday night, while Oswego will host no. 3 Geneseo. Game times are at 7 p.m.
