Recent Oswego State graduate Derrick Smith was named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District second team for at-large sports on May 21. Smith majored in adolescence education and earned a 3.82 GPA this school year while qualifying for the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. The Mexico, New York native was a two-time team captain for the Lakers after joining the program as a sophomore transfer from Division 1 Clarion University.
Smith's work in the classroom has been recognized by numerous organizations. The National Wrestling Coaches Association has twice named him a Scholar All-American, and he has been named to the Commissioner's List by the State University of New York Athletic Conference. Recently, SUNY Oswego named Smith the recipient of the Donald Snygg award, given annually to the most oustanding senior male student-athlete.
