Nicanor, the three-year-old baby brother of the late Barbaro, achieved his first victory on May 13 at Delaware Park. Unlike Barbaro, it took Nicanor four starts to achieve his first win. The Ryan Maloney Blog officially proclaims Nicanor the Ozzie Canseco of thoroughbreds. Also, the fact that Nicanor is already three years old tells us he has missed his chance to run for the roses. The Kentucky Derby is exclusive to three-year-olds and was run two weeks ago.
Update: Thanks to Anna for the heads up on this. Nicanor's debut was almost as ill-fated as Barbaro's swan song:
I don't think you could call a 15-length victory a failure. And, Barbaro broke his maiden on the turf also. Additionally, if you watch his last 2 races he came very close to winning and held on for first. His first race should be thrown out - he caught his hoof and injured and he broke horribly. True, he matured a little later than Brother Barbaro, but he still could enter the Belmont.
