Garrow Scores Twice, Women's Hockey Advances in Codfish

Tiarra Garrow may have come up short in her quest for a SUNYAC tennis title, but she's got her women's ice hockey teammates one step closer to the Codfish crown. The Oswego State junior winger lit the lamp twice tonight in a 5-1 win over the University of Massachussetts Boston.

Sophomore netminder Emi Williams stopped 39 shots to pick up her third win of the season. The Alaska native shut the Beacons out for the game's final 43:59 after allowing a power play goal in the first to Lauren Duran. That marker sent the two teams into the locker room tied at 1-1 after 20 minutes. Garrow had put Oswego State up 1-0 with an even strength tally at 12:52.

Sophomore Emily Grippin found the back of the net in the second for what would turn out to be the game-winning goal. Seniors Jessica Lister and Stephanie Esposito were credited with the assists.

Just 80 seconds later, Lauren Gilpin netted her first collegiate goal to put the Lakers up 3-1. Oswego State took that lead into the third period where they would add more insurance.

Garrow's team-leading forth goal of the season would come at 5:52 with a helper from sophomore Megan Big Snake. Tri-captain Angie Friesen then capped off the scoring with Lister and Esposito each recording another assist.

UMass-Boston fell to 6-2-1 on the year and saw their four-game winning streak snapped. Tonight's loss was their first at the Clark Athletic Center since Feb. 9, 2008 as their nine-game home winning streak came to an end.

Oswego State improved their record to 5-5-1 and snapped a two-game losing streak. The Lakers have yet to lose when playing away from the Campus Center Ice Arena. They'll look to continue that streak tomorrow evening at 5 p.m. in the Codfish Bowl Championship against defending champion Trinity.
