Ostrander Era Begins Today

The Oswego State field hockey team and first-year coach Brandi Ostrander (pictured, right) welcome Houghton College to Laker Field today to kick off the 2008 season.  This marks the third game of the season for the Highlanders (0-2); they were shut out by #1 Bloomsburg and defending SUNYAC champion #8 Cortland last week.

Last season, Houghton escaped Oswego with a 3-2 overtime victory when forward Ashley Hoffman found the net in the 79th minute.  Hoffman returns as a junior this season, but coach Darlene Wells does not.  Former Robert Morris assistant Rachael Allison (pictured, left) was tabbed to take over the reigns of the Highlanders in July.  She comes into a program that went 28-23 over Wells's three seasons, none of which ended with a losing record.

The Lakers are looking to turn over a new leaf after two consecutive 14-loss seasons under former coach Marushka Eddy.  Eddy left Oswego after those two seasons with a career record of 5-28 to accept the head coach position for field hockey and women's lacrosse at Lasell College in Newton, Mass.

Oswego hired Ostrander to replace Eddy as both field hockey and lacrosse coach.  While Ostrander has an impressive mark as a lacrosse coach on her resume, today marks the start of her first venture into the sport of field hockey.  Game time is set for 4 p.m.
