Offensive Coordinator Rob Spence Out At SU?
As you can see in the screen grab above, FootballScoop.com is reporting that the Syracuse University men's football program has two coaching vacancies to fill as of today. The site reports that Offensive Coordinator Rob Spence and Wide Receivers Coach Jamie Elizondo have been "let go."
Multiple Syracuse reporters and bloggers have already expressed their surprise at the announcement in the case of Spence. I must say I do not share their sentiment. The Orange offense ranked second-to-last in scoring and yards in the Big East this season. Sure, quarterback Greg Paulus set a single-season school record for completions, but he averaged just seven yards per attempt, which also ranked second-to-last in conference.
As for Elizondo, I don't think anyone will express any surprise at his dismissal. The receiver corps at SU had a season-long case of the dropsies that never seemed to be cured.
The University has yet to release a statement concerning any coaches to the football coaching staff.
UPDATE: Syracuse's Sue Edson (Assistant Director of Athletics in charge of Athletic Communications - because we're Syracuse and we're above using the title of SID) has confirmed to Syracuse.com that Spence, Elizondo, and defensive line coach Derrick Jackson are not being retained.
