Former Buffalo State Hockey Player Dies in Plane Crash

A former Buffalo State women's hockey player was a passenger on a Continental Airlines flight that crashed Thursday night near Buffalo, killing 50 people.

Among the crash victims is Maddy Loftus (pictured), a Parsippany, N.J. resident who attended Buffalo State College from 2002 to 2004, said Jeff Ventura, sports information director at the college. Loftus was supposed to play in Saturday’s women’s ice hockey reunion game, Ventura said.

Loftus transferred to Saint Mary’s University in Minnesota after completing her freshman and sophomore years at Buffalo State, he said. She was among 14 women, many of whom are local, lined up to play in Saturday’s game.

The flight had departed from Newark, N.J. and was on its final approach when it crashed into a house in Clarence.
