Mags-Less Lakers Win 4th Straight

Senior forward Brendan McLaughlin tallied a pair of goals and an assist, scoring the winning goal with 4:27 remaining in the third period, to lead Oswego State (4-1-0 overall, 2-0-0 SUNYAC) to its fourth straight win with a 5-4 triumph over SUNY Fredonia in a SUNYAC men’s hockey contest at Fredonia. The victory gave head coach Ed Gosek his 100th career coaching win.

McLaughlin’s game winner came after the host Blue Devils (2-4-1, 0-3-0 SUNYAC) scored twice in a 2:55 minute span in the third period to tie the game at 4-4 with 7:15 remaining in the period. Freshman defender Hank Van Boxmeer and senior Ryan Ellis assisted on the winning goal.


Ellis, the game’s third star, finished with a goal and two assists, while junior Brad Dormiedy and sophomore Joe Hall each tallied a goal and an assists. Freshman Eric Selleck registered a pair of assists.


After a scoreless opening period, the Lakers jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals from Ellis (5:52), McLaughlin (17:57), and Hall (18:08) before Fredonia got on the board with :46 remaining in the period on a power play goal from junior forward James Muscatello. Muscatello opened the third period with his second goal 1:57 into the third period to pull the Blue Devils to within a goal before Oswego regained its two-goal lead on a goal from Dormiedy at 7:51.


Fredonia tied the game up with goals from senior forward Richard Boyce (9:50) and junior forward Andrew Dissanayake (12:45) before McLaughlin tallied the game winner.


Laker senior goalie Chris Hyk stopped 33 of 37 shots to improve to 2-1-0 on the season, while Fredonia junior Pat Street made 40 saves on 45 Oswego shots in picking up the loss.


Oswego continues its Western New York road swing on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. contest at Buffalo State College.
